Vibes for Ozzie

Post by devildeac » March 17th, 2012, 12:27 am

His father died tonight. Duke basketball is lethal to elderly fathers and their/there/they're sons who are avid readers/posters at CTN and DBR and near fanatical Duke MBB fans. My dad died 3 years ago while watching his/my/our beloved Blue Devils stink up the arena against 'Nova. You will be in our prayers tonight, Ozzie, and for as long as you need them.

Condolences to Ozzie and all of the Ozzie family. Losing a father is hard. May the many years of memories help everyone through the next days and weeks and months.

Thanks all. I've gotten several text messages from y'all and I appreciate them all.

Here's the story.
About half way through the first half, my phone rang and I saw my brother was calling. I ignored the call - I was at a basketball game. He called again and I answered. He was out of town (touring colleges on the west coast of Florida with my 16 year old nephew) and he got a message to call the hospital where my dad has been for 10 days, apparently getting better. He was fine, relatively speaking, when my mom left the hospital at 6:30 pm after feeding him his dinner. And hour later she got a call and he had passed away after she left. He would have been 98 on April 1st. There being nothing I could do tonight, I stayed to see the game. I left with 2 minutes to go, an hour too late. A pitiful display of Not Duke Basketball. I'll be going back down to Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow for a week or two. He lived a good life, was a great husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He would have been happier if he had died about 3 years ago. May he rest in peace. I'm glad I saw him last week and 2 weeks earlier.

Thanks all. He lived a good/great life, except for the last couple of years. He told me over 30 years ago his wishes, and it wasn't to live the way he's been. He's in a better place, and we'll all miss him.

I'm driving down today. I wanted to leave an hour ago and I haven't packed yet.

Now Dad, about that PowerBall drawing tonight...

All of your CTN family is grieving with you, Oz. When Ozzie hurts, we all hurt. You can take great comfort in knowing you gave your dad such good friendship, joy and 3 generations that follow him to be proud of. Nobody could ask for more. I'm sure he agrees.

Love and hugs to you all.

You made us smile, Ozzie :) I hope you have an uneventful drive then find yourself surrounded by family and friends and wonderful memories. Stevo and I were thinking about how rough last night must have been for you in many ways and wishing we could do something to make it easier. Peace, love and hugs to you and your family. You are a lucky man, Oz, to have had such great parents, and to have had them so long. I'm jealous. Love, hugs, vibes, and prayers, man.
