Re: Do you eat bread crusts?
We call those pieces of bread "duck bread."
When my brothers and I were little, my mom used to put the crusty ends of the bread into a plastic bread bag in the freezer. When the bag was full, she would take us to the duck pond at the Sunnyside Cemetery. We would spend the afternoon feeding our old bread to the ducks.
I save my bread crusts in the freezer now for my squash casseroles. I feel rather guilty denying the ducks their bread.

By far the best use of bread crusts I've ever heard of! Yeah for Mom's ideas!CathyCA wrote:We call those pieces of bread "duck bread."

I love the crusts, especially the ends of rye bread. They are usually smaller than the "regular" slices, so I don't use them for sammiches, but I love 'em toasted with butter. They get extra crispy!

Re: Do you eat bread crusts?
Great poll!
Hell YES! I love the end pieces, and it always blows my mind when people just throw them away like they are trash (yes, I've seen it happen). How spoiled is that? That's perfectly good food people! And I actually prefer it at times.
Of course I voted, YES!

The butts of sandwich bread are good for ducks and homemade bread crumbs.
The butts of a good loaf of real bread? My favorite.

Sadly, bread is NOT good for ducks. Empty calories and not properly digested. A little won't hurt them but Ducks where they are commonly fed bread can be malnourished.IowaDevil wrote:By far the best use of bread crusts I've ever heard of! Want to feed ducks?
Grapes cut in half
Cracked corn, barley, oats, birdseed or other grains
Frozen peas that have been defrosted
Duck feed pellets available from farm supply stores
Human food is generally only good for humans (and sometimes not even that is true).

I could live on bread and butter. Emulsified vegetable oil molded and dyed to look like butter is not allowed in my house. Butter. I accept no substitutes.

Re: Do you eat bread crusts?
We have ducks in my neighborhood. I feed them lemon-grilled tilapia with an orange zest crust. Occasionally, I offer them a salad - topped with oyster quackers, but they rarely take me up on it. I am not interested in feeding any more ducks since a GOOSE attempted to steal a Chicken McNugget out of Christian's hand about 10 years ago. Did you know that geese like McNuggets (and kid fingers)?

And while I'm at it, I will never ever feed another seagull as long as I live.

I like the crust and also the end piece of the loaf if toasted (I'm with you Cathy and Windsor) with real butter.

Re: Do you eat bread crusts?
I'm very happy to see so many answers for people enjoying the crusts. I like to make little sandwiches out of the crusts from a store bought loaf. Lather it up with some mayo, lay down the meat, fold then enjoy! Crusts off a nice, freshly baked loaf of a good bread are a delicacy!
Crust + Toaster + Butter = Heaven.
You wanna take it a step further you could always smear a lil Nutella and finish with fleur de sel!

I found out years ago that geese can HISS! Up close, like REALLY up close, they can be quite intimidating.CathyCA wrote:

I like the crusts on bread and love the end slices of a loaf.
