Romeo the Lemur, RIP
I just read about Romeo the Lemur who passed away at the Lemur Center at age 19. I immediately thought of my Crazie Talk friends, especially Lavabe. Condolences to all.
The time is out of joint, O cursed spite!

For that matter, Meritaten, the Crowned Lemur, died late last year, no more than a week after I saw her for the final time. I observed her as she was born, WAY BACK in my undergrad days (give or take a year). She was about 29. Fortunately, I was able to see her (same weekend as dd's second wedding of the year) before she died.

Man, sorry to hear this. What is the average lifespan for a Lemur?Lavabe wrote:For that matter, Meritaten, the Crowned Lemur, died late last year, no more than a week after I saw her for the final time. It could probably go as high as 30s or 40s. Depends on captivity vs. the wild. In short, we don't have firm answers on that for most lemur species, EJ. To answer that question requires studying individuals for MANY years.EarlJam wrote:Man, sorry to hear this. I read that Romeo liked to have his back scratched. Me, too!

How intelligent are they? Not a smart-ass question; I ask sincerely. They are sort of like monkeys, yes? Same intelligence level?Lavabe wrote:It could probably go as high as 30s or 40s. Not intelligent to the point that I'd feel comfortable having one take the SAT, but in terms of being able to keep track of things, memory tasks, and other cognitive functions, they do reasonably well. I want to say that something about this appeared in one of the Duke Alumni Magazines in the last three years.EarlJam wrote:How intelligent are they? Not a smart-ass question; I ask sincerely. Would you feel comfortable having them tutor a member of the unc football team?Lavabe wrote:Not intelligent to the point that I'd feel comfortable having one take the SAT, but in terms of being able to keep track of things, memory tasks, and other cognitive functions, they do reasonably well. I'm pretty sure that would qualify as animal cruelty.devildeac wrote:Would you feel comfortable having them tutor a member of the unc football team?Lavabe wrote:Not intelligent to the point that I'd feel comfortable having one take the SAT, but in terms of being able to keep track of things, memory tasks, and other cognitive functions, they do reasonably well. Seriously, lemurs (and other primates) are pretty intelligent, but I don't think we have enough info just yet to say what sort of level of intelligence lemurs have.
