1986 Duke Team

Post by EarlJam » December 27th, 2011, 1:12 pm

It just hit me that 2011 marked the 25th anniversary of the senior class that included Alarie, Bilas, Dawkins, and Henderson.

Was anything done at Cameron or Duke this year to recognize them? I don't remember anything but I'm down here in Hotlanta. God I loved that team, and I cried my eyes out when they lost to Louisville in the title game.

Nope. Nothing. Maybe your calling attention to the oversight will start something. I think it was overshadowed by the 903 thing. ( Of course without them there probably would never have been a 903.)

I hope they do something for them. BTW, I cried in '96, too.

Mark Alarie, #32 before #32 came along!

Nice shorts, and who's the female Wake Forest player in the photo?

Some more cool photos B-) :D

It helps being in the Class of '76, because our reunions coincide!

The Wake Forest player is Mitch Cullen, class of 1988. He was dating my law school classmate, Pattie, at the time this photo was taken. I remember that Pattie was so excited that her boyfriend made the cover of Sports Illustrated. Naturally, as a recent Duke grad (and as a friend of Mark Alarie's), I was very proud of this cover for Mark and the 1986 team.

Pattie still hates Duke to this day. Some of you may remember meeting her and her husband (not Mitch!) at our tailgate when they came to the Virginia Tech football game with me this fall.

This poor Wake Forest team went 0-14 in the conference in 1986 and 8-21 overall.

Ozzie, cool but you should really work on your social shyness. You had a great opportunity here and should have worked to actually be IN the photos. Just sayin'.

Good pics. The '86 team was awesome. I was almost in shock when they lost. I promised myself I would never get that upset about losing again and I haven't.

I understand that!! I was very upset 1999. And after 2006 when Duke lost to LSU and Big Baby, I balled my eyes out. I vowed I would Never get that upset over losing again. And I haven't. I just felt like Sheldon and JJ and team were so deserving of a National Title, but we needed everyone else to step up. And from that team, Shel and JJ and Josh McRoberts are on NBA teams. Marty Pocius plays in Euro league.

That class also included Weldon WIlliams (standing next to Ozzie in one of his photos). Today, while cleaning out the very last of my storage locker, I found this in one of my art portfolios. Duke has done the team posters every year since K showed up, this is the third one they put out. :happy-bouncyblue: (CathyCA is in this pic somewhere!)

I'm the fourth one over on the second to the top row. My roommate Della is next to me wearing the Duke sweatshirt. Of course, I'm all prepped out in my J.G. Hook blouse with the Peter Pan collar and blue sweater, complete with gold Add-A-Beads. I'm certain that I was wearing dark blue wide wale corduroy pants with a Gay Boyer belt, blue knee socks and tassled loafers.

The class also included Bill Jackman, but he transferred to Nebraska (his home state) after his freshman year.

Cathy - where are you in relation to the foam #1 hand that someone is holding up? :?:

She is three people to the left of it, with her right hand raised. Della is next to her (towards the hand) with the Duke sweatshirt. If you click on the pic, you'll see it full sized.

Good gravy, I recognized a handful of people in that picture. One of the cheerleaders lived in the dorm and dragged some people over.
