If you don't attend ECU football, baseball, basketball, or other sports, and not affilated with East Carolina, there is always shopping and eating out. There seems to be plenty of shops and restaurants.

I remember the days before the Bypass, and you had to go through all the little towns and villages to get to Greenville. It seemed like the longest drive once you were out of Raleigh, and took 64. There were farms and country stores, and not much else.

No interstate highway! Thanks for the Greenville update. I guess that's why the ECU students party hardy, since there isnt alot to do. Not like they can drive 20 or 30 minutes to a near city, either. Those Pirates surely know to party! I went to a few Halloween parties, when I was younger! The streets were closed and everyone dressed up.

Actually, the ECU students do NOT "party hardy" any more. Many of them are extremely serious and focused students. My receptionist and my legal assistant are ECU students.

Greenville is not a good place to party. The Greenville police still close down 5th Street and the surrounding blocks on Friday and Saturday nights, but the police presence is so heavy that it really has put a damper on the downtown bars and nightlife. Those who come from out of town to party in Greenville often learn the hard way (DWIs, underage drinking tickets, etc.) that Greenville is not a good place to come to party. (I know a good attorney who can help these people. . .)

Greenville is a very good town in which to raise a family. The schools here are very good. There are plenty of youth sports, scouting and church activities to keep kids busy. The real estate is beyond affordable, and the architecture is mostly tasteful. For the most part, shopping stinks here (thank goodness we have internet shopping--I've spent $73.00 buying clothes this afternoon that would have stimulated our local economy if we'd had any decent stores here in town), and the restaurants on the whole are mediocre at best. There are a few stores and restaurants that I enjoy patronizing, and there is the cutest little wine shop around the corner from my house. The best part about Greenville is that I can be in the Atlantic Ocean or at RDU in 90 minutes.

I remember the old 2-lane highways that led from the Triangle area into Greenville. It took FOREVER to get here. Thankfully, we're four-laned with 70 mph speed limits leading to and from Greenville in at least 2 directions (Triangle and Kinston/southern beaches).

Wow! Cathy thanks for the updates about Greenville and ECU! Sounds like the police have the lock down on the bars and nightlife that consumed the Streets of Downtown G'ville.

I am sure there are plenty of alcohol and drug related charges involving ECU students, because some things remain the same. East Carolina was always a fun place to party and go to a Football game. Back in the day, it was.
