Cheap Gas and other notes on saving gas $

OK, I posted this in EJ's tattoo thread, but thought maybe it needed its own thread, and since we're not OY I'd start one for it

Yes, that stretch of I-40/85 (Burlington-Mebane-Graham area of NC) has cheap gas, and I thought that the cheapest was either at exits 154, 152 or 150, but I learned a couple of weeks ago, quite by happenstance, that it's cheaper at exit 148, which is a far smaller and less busy exit. The Pilot, Flying J and Hess stations have all the big billboards with the prices posted, but I was looking for my free drink refill at a Kangaroo, which I saw at exit 148 at the Kangaroo/Marathon station. It, and the Shell station next door, were 2 to 4 cents cheaper than the Hess, Pilot and Flying J's up the road over the Memorial Day weekend when I was going back and forth to Banner Elk. So take that info for what it's worth, generally about half a buck in your pocket after you fill up your tank!

A note if you happen to have a Shell Citibank Mastercard and have been getting the 5% gasoline rebates like I mentioned a couple of months ago. Citibank is changing the rebate program later this month and basically ending it, making it so bad that I have used the card for the last time - they have totally lost my considerable business. And, they are discontinuing auto-drafting payments too, effective this month. Hope they are happy with their decisions - I'm not. I have other options, and I'm going to use them. I'll still buy Shell gasoline - I think it, BP, Exxon and Mobil are the best gasolines on the market today (because of their detergent properties in keeping your fuel systems clean). As for those other options, the Chase Rewards card and Discover are offering a 5% rebate on gasoline for the next 3 months (Chase on up to $1500 worth of purchases, Discover for only $300 worth - who are they trying to kid?). And of course, the BP/Chase card still has the 5% rebate as discussed previously (10% for the first 60 days!)

Stay safe this holiday weekend. Thursday was deadly on the interstates around the Triangle with multiple fatalities in multiple accidents. Ozzie, I don't know the Exit number for the Flying J and Hess in Haw River (Alam Comm College exit), but one exit up (driving towards Burlington), is the Hwy 54 Chapel Hill exit, and those stations are generally 2 - 4 Cents cheaper. There are 3 stations on that exit. And if you need to make an ABC package pickup, the new Graham ABC store is open!

There's a Sheetz at 154. If CB&B could have made it to VA, gas is generally 10-15 cents cheaper up there. With NC taxes rising, you can save another 2 cents per gallon.

On Thursday, gas at Costco in Greensboro was $3.19; today it's $3.28, still pretty good! Sam's Club in G'boro has today's $3.19 gas.

As a reminder from the NASCAR thread, if you have the Shell Rewards Debit Card (is that what it's called?), the Wednesday after a Kurt Busch win, get your gas at Shell, and you'll save 22 (that's Busch's car number) cents a gallon. He won last week at Sonoma, CA. Check with Shell for exact details of the promotion.

Y'all are lucky. Price range in eastern PA is $3.50 - $3.60. Jersey is about a dime cheaper or so.

I have to put the premium gas in my car. No one ever lists the prices for premium.

I think I paid $3.59 per gallon today at the Hess station on Firetower Road in G-Vegas.

Yup, I was going to just put in a few bucks to get me to the state line, where there is a Love's gas station with great prices.

If you have a walmart card and a walmart gas station, you can save 10 cents a gallon. (I don't, but I have noticed that walmart generally has better prices than the other local stations anyway.) I'm not sure if it's the same place that Ozzie is talking about, but the gas station at the exit you take for the JR Outlet (You can't miss it, there are a billion signs telling you that exit and outlet center exist) has the cheapest gas on the that stretch. Since it's not right off the exit, but a couple blocks away, I sometimes will pass it by because I don't feel like waiting for traffic lights. (By the way, if you want to buy all of your Christmas presents in one place cheap..go to that JR outlet. They have something for everyone.)

IF YOU HAVE A KROGER CARD (not the credit card): For every $100 you spend at Kroger, you get 10 cents a gallon off at Shell. You can see details at your local Shell station. You also get something like 10 cents a gallon off at Kroger gas, but I've just noticed that they now say you get up to $1 off at Kroger gas.
I believe you can save more at Kroger gas if you use both your Kroger card AND a Kroger credit card.

Gas prices have risen since July 4th. I have seen a 30 cent jump in about 10 days. Will gas ever be $2 a gallon again? I would love to see $1 a gallon.

Bud got gas at Walmart in Mebane with the card I bought last week, which made the gas 3.49. Better than 3.65 in Hillsborough.
