B got his 1997 BMW back from the shop (the check engine light was on) and before we could get it back home, the check engine light was back on. So he's going back to the shop this morning. :ymsigh:

All of our cars require inspection in July, and my Saab also has a burning check engine light and needs a new taillight cover. The odometer turned over 230,000 this weekend. I will drive it until the wheels absolutely fall off and can no longer be put back on.

My check engine light is always on. I've been told by a mechanic that the best way to fix it is with a piece of black electrical tape.

Good news all around! I'm glad your car is fixed, and that you are safe.

My Chevette that got me through 4 years of college had black tape over the check engine light. It would come on as soon as I went over 45, and Dad's mechanic did the black tape treatment, and all was well.

B would like to trade his BMW in for something that gets more than 18 miles to the gallon, and it's amazing that the people at a dealership who tell you the check engine light is meaningless won't run a diagnostic on it before saying, "Oh, we have to discount your car a thousand dollars because the check engine light is on." Me too. I was actually closer to your house, only about 10 miles past your exit. I knew y'all were at the lake though.
