July 4th Holiday Plans

Went to a family friend's lake house on Saturday with my family. His girlfriend was there. OMG what a total biyotch. Walked in the door giving orders. Made my 70 yr old dad stand on a porch rail, in cowboy boots, with a HUGE drop off on the other side, to hang a fly trap. If you dared to set down a cup or plate that didn't have your name on it, she threw it away. Was going through our friend's house, telling people what she was getting rid of when she moves in. She got falling down drunk and took her granddaughter down to the lake. Yelled at our friend when she almost dropped her granddaughter in the water (no life jacket, water about 10 ft deep), because he wasn't there to help her. That was the final straw. He dumped her right then and there for endangering the baby. Told her to pack her stuff and get out. Cooler heads prevailed - we hid her car keys so she couldn't drive off with the baby as she wanted to do. We figured she didn't need to be driving if she couldn't remember who had taken her keys. She left early Sunday morning, after she had slept it off, and there was much rejoicing.

We do have lots of classic stories, so it wasn't all bad.

All-America dinner planned. New York strips marinading in the House of Lawgrad special marinade, Texas Toast, corn from a little farm plot nearby, a special wine from Richard Childress Winery in Lexington, and organic broccoli from China. Oops.

At least there's apple pie and ice cream.

We had steaks on Friday night and burgers and (Costco) all beef hotdogs last night. I think I'll bring in a couple of pizzas for dinner tonight! What could be more American than that?

The devildeacs had a "staycation" for the holiday. A long workday on Friday, followed by a nap and some leftovers for dinner and some dancing that night. Yard work, a nap and a cook-out on Saturday with the children, old and "new" ones except dukediv2012 who was packing to leave on a mission trip to DC with his youth group on Sunday AM. We feasted on grilled beef tenderloin, twice baked potatoes, vegetable crudites, fancy salads and ice cream pie. Sunday was a day of worship, more yard work, another nap and a trip to Henderson to dine with a couple whose wedding we were attendants in 33 years ago (and vice versa). Today is more R&R with a lot of walking to make up for our caloric indiscretions over the last 3 days. A country club about 1.5 mile from our house traditionally has a very nice fireworks display at dusk so that may be our evening walk.

I am also about 3/4 the way through 1776 by David McCullough and am stunned/amazed/astounded that we are still not a British colony after learning about the truly wretched, deplorable condition our "army" was in during the winter of 1776.

Saturday night we had Smithfield's Chicken and BBQ - I forgot that (and that today was Monday and not Sunday)... CRS disease really sucks! So the Q was taken care of, and just in case I hadn't had enough beef in the last few days, well, I finally finished my Chutzpah pastrami for lunch today!

This year, we're all about sleepin' in, enjoying a perfect weather weekend (even if a majority of that enjoyment is from inside our climate-controlled house) and some good grilled food & cocktails. We may get some yardwork done today, but only because the dandelions are taller than some of our shrubs.

I can't wait until FutureDA is old enough to appreciate things like fireworks and parades!

The family just finished a great meal consisting of grilled beef ribs (marinated for 48 hours in the wife's super secret Asian marinade), corn-on-the-cob, potato salad and baked beans. The weather is absolutely fantastic as summer has arrived in the Pacific Northwest with sunny blue skies and temps in the 70s. I handled the grill duties and played baseball and freeze tag with the grandson and daughter. I'm officially an old man now as I cannot out run a six year old.

Our family gathering for the Fourth was fantastic! The grilled ribs were succulent and covered with just enough caramelized sauce. The grill marinated chicken was divine. Lip smacking good: Saint Louis potato salad, baked beans, lemon chess pie, homemade ice cream. The weather was wonderful until after we finished eating when the heavy rains, wind and thunderstorms began to roll through Ashe County. Heavy rain and wind have caused some damage.... fallen trees, fallen power lines in a few communities around WS. 2-3 inches of rain in short period of time.... lots of water on pavement even on hills!

Everyone's safe, filled up with good food and tired. ;)

A full weekend with the whole family. My son-in-law rocks! He works so hard to take some of the load off of the OP here at the lake. I just love him for that. DukeRah tried to take it easy, but may have done too much.

We took the pontoon, aka The SheDevil, around to the next cove to watch the truly spectacular fireworks our neighbor is famous for.

Native tried hard (in vain) all weekend not to talk incessantly about his immanent move into Bell Tower and all the Duke friends he's already made and all the courses he wants to take and all the clubs and organizations he has to choose among ... we're about to stuff a rag in his mouth already, bless his heart!

We're all full of ribs and grits and salad and pie and cobbler and margaritas and beer and we're all a little crisp from sun on the lake. Now for a shower and a soft bed before we head back to Crappy Hell in the morning.

I'd rather watch the Boston Pops, but apparently the Boston celebration doesn't come on until 10:00.

PS, Ima, you cannot stuff a rag in Native's mouth. We're all thrilled for him too!

We went to Duke to see Max play. On the way, we ran into very large thunderstorm and lots of rain. The games were called off because of the storm. Can't have the kids walking to the gyms in that. It was still a nice day. Earlier Bud worked in the garden. I put up tomatoes. Tomorrow, he's back to work. I'm watching the Boston Pops tonight. I love them.

Sunset isn't until 9:08 pm in Seattle. It's currently 7:21 and the fireworks are popping. I bitch about the weather in the PNW all the time, but summertime and the sun staying up late is really nice.

What I don't understand is people who are setting off roman candles and such now, while it's still sunny.
