DukeRah is going in for the most extensive surgery of her life. (And that's saying something!) The mixed messages we were getting at Duke weren't helping matters. On the one hand they were telling us that cleaning up the mesh and mess inside her was a vital -- otherwise, she would be facing certain disaster sooner or later. On the other hand, the surgeon said he was NOT going in again. On the third hand, Infectious Disease told her to simply go home and find a PCP she could count on because sooner or later her infections were going to outsmart the antibiotics and there will be no saving her then. I said, "That's it?" The Doc replied, "That's it."
So we did. She found a great one at the Duke Clinic on Pickett Road who listened when she spoke and who has kept her out of the hospital for nearly a year. Yet, he still agrees that they've only been dodging bullets and the surgery is mandatory. He also advised her to go elsewhere than Duke because she was going to keep getting the same old run around. So, we went over to the dark side. The surgeon in the clinic at UNC took a month or so to look over her records (which must be a foot deep) and said he thinks he can help, but that it will be extensive. He's going in tomorrow with a plan A and a plan B. He tells her she may have to come to terms with the fact that she may never be really well, but, he's hopeful that he can give her a shot at it.
The operation will take all day and she'll be in intensive care for days. But, she's being very brave and we are all simply grateful that somebody is willing to take this on.
So, we need all your best vibes as we launch. I know you're up to it. You've worked miracles already. I believe that God is Love. And Love is what works miracles.
