NOOK or Kindle? (End of Week Poll!)

Post by EarlJam » June 10th, 2011, 10:46 am

If you have an e-reader, what kind do you own? If you are in the market for one, what kind do you think you'd buy?

I haven't looked at the Nook Color - it was not out yet when I bought my Nook. I might consider trading in for a new one - but not willing to go to much expense.

When do you think the cost of ebooks will come down? I think they should be discounted more than they are from the cost of a "real" book since there are not paper and printing costs.

Mrs. Ozzie got a regular Nook as her surprise Christmas gift this year. She's reading on it this very instant as we sit in Ozziedaughter's room as she is recovering from her procedure.

The issue is with the individual publishers, who control the pricing. True, there is no paper and printing cost but the information you are enjoying is intellectual property, copyright protected. The publishers and book stores are working together to find the right "medium," but you can see where a publisher would be concerned. Say you had always come out with a new book at $10.00 and it sold 10,000 copies in the first week. Okay, $100,000. Now, with e-readers, the same book comes out but people are sideloading it onto their devices, borrowing from friends for free and such. Though 10,000 copies are moved, now you only make $50,000 (as an example) because people are getting the books for free electronically.

Right now (and this is still evolving big time), each Nook account supports SIX books. This means that whenever you purchase a book on-line, you are really getting six for one. The publishers have negotiated with bookstores on this. For the Kindle, it's a five for one deal. Take the scenario above. Even if you take out the free downloading from friends, publishers are still looking at, in many cases, getting 1/6 of what they are used to getting from bulk purchasers. So in their eyes, they've already "bended" a lot.

It's all a lot like the music industry and MP3s a few years back. Publishers have to make a profit, and that, of course, drives the pricing. Again, this is an ever-evolving deal. Right now, the average discount for the purchase of a single e-book is around 60 percent. With time, publishers and booksellers will figure out the best pricing structure. Not sure if that will drive prices up or down, but as long as it's below the cost of the printed book, I think customers should be happy. We'll see. It's all very interesting.

Yes, selling bulk NOOK orders to mostly schools and colleges in Georgia, focusing on the Atlanta area.

I love it. It's a challenge, but is fun.

I had a NOOK, prefer it to the Kindle I currently have. Got into a dispute with B&N about the price of the Nook and the discount they were offering at the time. From what I hear, retail channel checks are showing the NOOK out selling the Kindle last quarter.
