Our long national nightmare is over.

Post by wilson » April 20th, 2011, 11:53 pm

In what at least one website describes as perhaps "the final deathblow to poker-as-spectator-sport," ESPN has dropped all of its poker programming in the wake of the recent gambling-related indictments against the operators of the three largest online poker sites.
Now, if we could just get rid of the endless crap about the NFL Draft, we'd be in business. Why anyone ever thought that or poker was worthy of being televised ad nauseam is totally beyond me.

If the Canadian sports networks drop it as well I'll be thrilled but, until then, I cannot share your joy as our national nightmare will continue. Rounders was a decent enough movie I guess but I blame it for the rise of all this poker crap.

The only question that remains is what those networks will do if the NFL season is wiped out by the labour problems - will they bring poker back to fill slots in the schedule? If so, I fear your jubilation may be short lived.

Televised poker wasn't the national nightmare. That honor belongs to the crapfest of reality shows like The Bachelor and Survivor. That nightmare rages on, during primetime even! Ugh.

Now that the fireman and lumberjack competitions are no longer on ESPN, poker IS the crapfest of reality sports shows.

I would watch Survivor if they would do something worthwhile. Any jerk-off can hold a statue to get "immunity" or hang on poles over a swimming pool (which is what they were doing last week while I was in the gym and was stuck watching). This was the only time I have ever watched, and it was under duress.

Send all those contestants to someplace where life is very hard, and have them build schools, or hospitals, or dig clean water wells, or fix roads.

I can think of no reason, not even eye candy, to watch The Bachelor. I don't need to. The office staff is addicted. :9f:
