I need snoring help...

My snoring drives my wife nuts. Has anybody found any remedies that really work? I have an appointment with my dentist to see about a mouthguard thingy, but I was just wondering if anybody had found something else that worked. Thanks.

OK. There's really only one solution. A CPAP machine. Pain in the ass solution until you get used to wearing the mask, but it works. Both you and your wife will sleep much better. MUCH better. See your doctor, get a sleep study done for sleep apnea, let your insurance company pay for part of it, and get one. There are even some models that don't require a mask.

CPAP or a divorce.

My mom wears a CPAP. It took care of the snoring problem, but she also feels so much better and doesn't need naps in the middle of the day any more.

ExLax complained about my snoring. He got a divorce and that took care of his problem with my snoring.

ILJ married a snorer. Here is what I have learned in the last few years:
1) The snoring can be bad NOT ONLY because of what your wife has to deal with, but specifically it could be tied with another issue, sleep apnea.
2) Get thee to an ears, nose, & throat doctor. The doctor can do a simple examination to see if some relatively simple things might be at the root of it.
3) In my case (and in most cases), the doctor can make the decision to get you into a sleep study. DID THAT. He also identified some structural aspects of my sinuses that contributed to things. FWIW, my brother has used a CPAP for a number of years.
4) My sleep study revealed that I not only have/had moderate apnea, insomnia, I also snored a lot, and I showed some evidence of restless leg syndrome. As I told my ENT doctor, I had restless leg syndrome because the covers of the bed in my study were too tight, and my legs were wanting to stick out over the end of the bed.
5) The ENT said that I should lose weight and get rid of stress. Weight and stress can contribute to things. If at the end of 3 months things had not changed, I'd go on a CPAP to address the apnea.
6) I wound up going to Madagascar for 2 months. When I returned, I had lost a bunch of weight, reduced my stress, and gone was the apnea (and most of the snoring). ILJ reports that it is NOTHING like what it was last year at this time. And trust me... the snoring was MUCH worse in the last two years that I lived in Atlanta (when job stress was WAY high).

Do the wise thing... get thee to an ENT. Then proceed with sleep studies, if the ENT suggests so. The snoring is an annoyance, but if you have apnea to go along with it, you have an issue that must be addressed.

I used to date a woman that oft complained about my snoring. I told her that I've always found snoring to be somewhat endearing and that if she looked at it the right way, she would understand that with every snore, I am simply telling her as I lay next to her that "I love her." So basically, I'm telling her that I love her all night long. How cool is that?

Anyway, sort of to my surprise, that bullshi.....I mean, communicating that to her really worked! She begged my forgiveness for getting upset with me and we continued on our merry way together (she DID buy earplugs though).

Ironically, about three months later she started snoring in bed. What began as a faint, whisper of a flutter, escalated all to quickly into an ear-grating, tortuous melody straight from the bowels of Hell. After a few weeks of putting up with THAT shit, I finally asked her to "cut it out." She promised to try. Three more nights, three more episodes of no sleep due to her empty promises to end the madness. Finally, I had enough, so I shot her.

Since then, well, I never knew one could sleep so peacefully. I do miss her at times, but I don't miss the lack of sleep.

Breathe Right Nasal Strips

I have allergy driven nasal and sinus polyps. I had them cut on 4 years ago. I also underwent a sleep study (torture chamber visit) before surgery. Back then, I was 80% blocked on one side and 100% blocked on the other. This test should never have happened before they were cut out. A CPAP was truly a joke on me at that time. The forced air through a nasal mask wasn't really getting into me. If you had a notion to lick your lips, breathe through your mouth or opened your mouth in the slightest, you were 'drowned' with air. I was accustomed to being up all night back in those days, so of course, they tried to put me to sleep at 10:00pm.THAT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE 5:00am They burst in on me around 1:00am, flashing the lights and strapping the mask on. I withstood this abuse for about 20 minutes. I could never have gotten back to sleep after the alarming wake-up (scared the Hell out of me) and the air blockages. Haven't repeated the test due to my experience, but now I HAVE to.

I second (third, fourth, whatever) the recommendation to see your doc for referral to a sleep study, especially if you're tired during the day. My husband used to snore so bad I considered the pillow treatment, but a CPAP was the better solution--he also stopped feeling like he was going to nod out all day long, that's how much his apnea was disturbing his sleep (he partly or completely stopped breathing ~20 times per hour during the study). The CPAP stopped the snoring immediately and completely, it was a huge, huge quality-of-life improvement for both of us right away. Then a few years later, I went for my own sleep study (I didn't snore very much, just would wake up feeling like I wasn't getting enough air), and so now we both have the sexy, sexy breathing machine.
