Duke Trivia

Post by Rolvix » September 7th, 2009, 2:17 pm

Considering we have some pretty intelligent and perhaps all-knowing alumni (and alumni in spirit) here, I figured it would be fun to have a trivia thread! Post all of your Duke University, Basketball, Football, etc. trivia questions here!

Trivia Question #1:
Who was the first player to go pro early under Mike Krzyzewski?

No cheating/Googling!

The first I can remember would be the year 3 people left early. But that seems too late...

Elton Brand, William Avery and Corey Maggette. The Three Amigos. Only one of them had K's "blessing", although in retrospect, I'm sure he is glad Maggette left when he did.

Is Brand the winner? Did he not declare before the other two?

Or do we count Trajan since he "went pro" in baseball and paid his own basketball scholarship?

I thought Maggette did have K's support. (I'm sure I'm wrong, I just don't remember him saying don't go). I knew Avery didn't. It's funny because Maggette really did make a good choice. The scandal aside, he has been a long time player and starter in the NBA. Can't look back and say it wasn't the best move.

Women took one written test as freshman and men took another. What were the two tests freshman used to be required to take? [-(

Damned if I know. I didn't have to take any written test as an incoming Engineering freshman in 1972.

Men took a traditions test while women took a campus rules test.

The difference between purposes of the two tests is one of many ways Duke mixed being on the cutting edge in some matters (admitting women students as early as 1898 and creating the Woman's College as an undergraduate school) with contradictory standards (housekeeping staff on West made the men's beds for years, not any beds on East Campus). Compared to other colleges of the region, the Woman's College rules allowed considerable latitude for the women students to be responsible for their own decisions and behavior and were not as strict as those for women enrolled elsewhere.

A question from the old traditions test: How many stones did it take to complete the Chapel?

An interesting idea that has fallen by the wayside. The traditions test that is. Sort of like a citizenship test.

According to legend, why was the fence around East Campus originally constructed, and why is it so "short"? When is the seated Mr. Duke statue on East Campus supposed to stand up? How many times has he actually stood up? ;)

Since the questions are focusing on East Campus, how about this one..... What's the legend about The Sower?

Terry Sanford had a number of small replicas made up to give to various honorees, but that's not the story I've got in mind.
