Man VS. Food --Durham episode

Post by CameronBornAndBred » September 3rd, 2009, 12:04 am

I've never watched this show on the travel channel, but while flipping through the tv tonight, saw this episode was on and they were featuring Durham's fare. I still haven't seen it, it was half way over when I found it. Has anyone watched it? What restaurants did they cover?

I didn't watch it. However, while the hygienist was doing my teeth yesterday, the dentist came in and said that they'd be interviewing the guy who runs Wimpy's Grill on Hillsborough Rd.

Wimpy's is great! When I was in PA school, we would head over for lunch on sunny days and picnic in the back of my classmate's pick up truck.

Is this the show where a guy goes to various places and tries their version of gut busters and the sort? I have not seen the show yet, but it sounds interesting.

I've tried Wimpy's in Durham, not bad.... but I must say... it is NOT the Wimpy's grill of old (national/regional chain once upon a lifetime ago)

I saw it. He went to a hot dog joint in Raleigh. He played around on a BB court whilst wearin' Duke duds.

I hear for BBQ he hit the "Backyard Pit BBQ" on Hwy 55 in Durham, just south of Hwy 54. Not exactly an historic Durham BBQ, as far as I know. It's changed it's name three times in the last five years.

That reminds me of Rachel "I haven't come up with a suitable nickname for her dumb ass" Ray's visit to Durham for $40 A Day. She split time between Crapel Hill and Durham (though the show was labeled as a visit to Durham) having breakfast at Elmo's and a hot dog at the Bulls Game. She had que at "The Barbeque Joint". I haven't eaten there so I can't comment on her selection or the quality of food, but she did order a side of Brussels Sprouts with pulled pork, which in humble opinion has forever cemented her position in the Douchebag Hall of Fame.

Rachel Ray sucks.

I understand that I may be in the minority when it comes to Rachel Ray, and I gladly accept that position. For me, she adds little value to the culinary world other than a brand name for colorful cookware and trumped up kitchen lies. But hey, like you said, she's made a lot of money to carry in that bag.

Did I mention that I loathe Rachel Ray?

Bullock's has never done a thing for me.
As much as Durham has grown in the last few decades, this doesn't surprise me. Now there are thousands of more choices for where to eat, but when I was growing up and Durham was still tobacco fields instead of shopping malls and housing developments, Bullock's was one of THE places to eat. I haven't been back often enough to know, but if we showed up at Bullock's and there wasn't a line out the door and past the breezeway it's because they were closed. It's just one of those places that I grew up on. And the food kicks ass.

I'm sure she does, with her name all over them. But like most things that bear the name, I'm sure they're empty inside and useless.

I liked Bullock's back in the growing up in Durham days, too. I went to junior high school with Angela Bullock. She was one of the nicest, most beautiful girls I've ever known.

Let me add that I like Bullock's non-pork offerings: their fried chicken is great, as are the puppies and stew. But for BBQ, I have to go to .... dare I say it .... Chapel Hill *ducks*
