College?!?

Ahhhh.... College Applications
I can't believe it's already time to start looking at these things. I'm not completely sure I'm ready to leave just yet, although that feeling might change over the course of the year...
Didn't know you had to take THREE subject tests to apply to Georgetown. I only have two at the moment. (Not that Georgetown was high on my list, it was sort of a random college I was going to apply to).
What other schools would you guys suggest? I am applying to Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, NC State, Appalachian State, ECU, and MAYBE Georgetown. That is the order I would pick them in - as of right now. (Except Georgetown)
I know it's late to start looking at new schools, but heck, why not?

I am the worst person ever to give any advice on school applications. I applied to one school. I visited, I liked them. It's a good thing they accepted me.
Anyways, it's a good sounding list you have, best of luck. You have a great resource and advice center here. Just not from me.

You've got an obviously NC-heavy list here. What about Davidson? Depending on your affinity for especially Duke and Wake, Davidson could also be a good fit.
Alternatively, what about some non-NC schools (you're obviously not totally set on in-state tuition, as you've named multiple private schools)? UVA, perhaps, or Georgia? Vandy? Suwanee?
One thing I'm sure of: Go to carolina, and I'll see to it that you're banned.
I'm not kidding.

CellR, you've chosen some wonderful colleges. Any one of those would be a good place for you.
If I were to make a suggestion, I might ask you if you've considered going somewhere outside of the North Carolina area. For instance, have you considered applying to Stanford, UC-Berkeley, UCLA or another school on the west coast? They might be very interested in adding someone from the east coast to their freshman class next year. And you might enjoy spending four years in a very different environment.
Having said that, I'll just go ahead and tell you that when I was your age, my mind was made up and I knew exactly where I wanted to go to school. I only applied to one college. I would have never applied to a college on the west coast! (I had other applications ready to go to other schools in case I didn't get in to Duke during the early admissions process, but I never sent them off.) I was passionate about going to Duke, and I had prepared my entire life--okay, since the 6th grade--to get in to that school. I suspect that you've been just as deliberate in preparing to apply to college.
Good luck, and keep us informed of your progress.

I looked at UVA, but I decided that I would probably choose UNC over it. I know I probably shouldn't be saying that on a Duke board, but I figure I should be open-minded about college. People keep mentioning Davidson to me and I keep ignoring them. I think I'll take a real look at it now

My dad has mentioned Stanford before, but to be honest I know
nothing about any West Coast schools. Although from what I do know, Stanford does interest me. And hey, by this time next year their basketball program should be looking at a National Championship

I'm interested in studying Biology. But that's not set in stone at the moment.

Oh, and does anybody know anything about Duke Sailing? I'm interested in joining a sailing team - but one that is not so competitive that I have to be recruited.

You really should. It's a great little town, but also only about 20 min. from Charlotte. Pretty good athletics, and you'd get a killer education there. Davidson people love the place.
And I'm completely serious...if you go to carolina, you will be banned.

And I'll support him in that. This should remain a Tar Hole free zone.

I believe you
I still need to sort it out in my mind. If I am 100% positive I want to go to Duke I need to apply early/binding...

I think that, in about 95% of cases, binding early decision apps are not the right decision. Yours may well be in that 5% of cases, though.
Just my two cents.

Does that include me too? I'm considering getting a master's over yonder. Duke doesn't offer the program I am interested in.

That's what I've heard from a lot of people. At the moment I don't think I will. The thing is, there is a better chance of being accepted if you apply binding.

Education, specifically curriculum. As I'm working with medical students, helping to redesign the surgical curriculum, and residents, as well as doing research as regards medical education, I thought a Master's would be a natural progression.

Duke's Master's is geared towards teaching, I think it's a K-12 program or it's just a high school program. I can't remember. Just knew right of way it wouldn't work for me.
As an employee, Duke will help me pay for my degree.

I was just checking out their programs... I think you might be right on the education side, but the medical physics sounded pretty cool maybe coupled with the Master of Arts in Teaching!!! Once you get your Masters you'll want to get your Ph.D., right?
