Can we limit our plethora of mistakes and pull off the upset?

Jela Duncan will have surgery Monday morning for his torn Achilles tendon. His career is over. He tore it on the sidelines celebrating Shaun Wilson's TD run. He wasn't in the game when the injury occurred. This tears me up. Sad, sad news.

Shaun Wilson will be used in a feature back role due to the injury to Jela Duncan. I'm wondering if we will see the staff incorporate some new plays to take advantage of his speed and elusiveness. Against Georgia Tech, Duke used the Pistol formation and also ran the outside read option successfully. The inside read option has been our base play but with Wilson getting the majority of carries moving forward, I hope to see lots of the outside read option.

So what is the difference between the inside read option and outside read option? (a few video clips are worth a million words):

http://www.espn.com/college-football/vi ... =400869474

1. Inside read option is the play where Duncan scores his first touchdown. The running back goes inside or the QB keeps the ball and goes outside. We've run this play a thousand and one times this season so everyone should recognize it. The running back lines up behind the QB but off-set to one side.

2. Outside read option is the play where Duncan scores his second touchdown (going to the left) and Wilson scores his touchdown (going to the right). Both TDs were the same play just run to opposite sides. The running back goes outside or the QB keeps the ball and goes inside. The running back lines up beside the QB. The backside guard pulls (if the play is going left, the right guard pulls).

3. Pistol Formation is when the running back lines up directly behind the QB instead of off-set. Wilson's long run where he fumbles at the end of the play was run out of the Pistol Formation.

For those who actually take the time to read this post and watch the video clips, on Shaun Wilson's TD run which cut the GT lead to three points, check out the block on the outside by wide receiver Aaron Young (#8). Blocking like that is going to earn that young man more playing time.

Finally, one more comment on the outside read option. Those QB runs in the 1st quarter where Daniel Jones had so much success were outside read option plays where he decided to keep the ball and run up the middle. If you think back to last year's win over VT, we ran QB runs up the middle all afternoon.

Is it Saturday yet?

Very worthwhile read, Bob. Thanks for taking the time to 'splain and provide video, too.

Another close game :(

With so many injuries..... still able to compete for a Win.... with GaTech and VaTech and a good game vs Louisville.
This has been a season with many injuries and the Curse of the Captains :(
