Duke vs Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech opened as a 10.5 points favorite. Our defense can stop them, we saw that last year. The offense has to score some points perhaps a lot of points.
Duke 31, Georgia Tech 28

Although I am not the biggest fan of the black uniforms, this is the exact same combination that we wore when we beat Georgia Tech last year in Atlanta. Hopefully the outcome is similar this time around.

From Grad Devil (via a Laura Keeley tweet): Duncan cleared to play Saturday. Great news!

We could really use a spark from Jela on Saturday to help this offense get going. I am confident that our defense will do their part, but our offense will need to have a great performance for us to win. When we beat GT last year we ran for 253 yards, had zero turnovers, and possessed the ball for the exact same amount of time that GT did. It was our most impressive offensive performance of the 2014 season, in my opinion. I believe we will need to see a similar performance from this unit on Saturday for us to have a chance.

Aside from whatever effect a couple of days of rain may have on how the game is played, I think one of the big keys will be how quickly Thomas can get into a good rhythm and connect in a timely way with all aspects of offensive play. The stiff competition on the field last week and this week is pushing him to develop. I believe he's got what it takes to be a very good QB, but he's got to get in front of that learning curve in order to take charge.

Here is my game preview:

Achieving balance on offense will be key. We must run and pass successfully in order to sustain drives and keep Justin Thomas and the GT offense off the field.

To quote Olivia Manning, "I have seen one or two football games." There are not many as satisfying as the win over GA Tech today. The defense was dominant, dominant over an opponent known for decades for stout defenses and difficult offensive schemes. The offense showed flashes of the potential that can make them dominant, too.
Well done!

Coach Cutcliffe called the GT victory a milestone win and I do not interpret his comment as either an overstatement or coach speak. Yesterday was huge. In his post game press conference (available in its entirety at GoDuke.com), Coach Cutcliffe said it will be important to see how the team responds to the win. The team's response to the Northwestern loss was positive, now the team has to show they can respond to a big win. I'm paraphrasing so I encourage anyone who is interested to go watch the press conference themselves. Coach Cutcliffe has interesting, thought provoking comments on many of the individual players such as Cash, Norman, Edwards, Smith, Powell and Duncan as well as the defense, special teams and offense as whole units plus he shares his thoughts on the targeting rule at the end.
Johnell Barnes will be ineligible for the 1st half against Boston College so this is an opportunity for another receiver to step up and perform.
