Tick tick BOOM!
Folks, short of revoking every college degree from UNC, SACS gave an alarm that affects EVERY student, faculty, and alum.
Expect admin to move quickly. If you can't give degrees, you're pretty much unable to be a university. Admin will not let it go that far.
I can't recall any university getting this sanction.
Our Tar Heel neighbors need to straighten up this matter FASt.
Expect faculty to speak up.

From your mouth to God's ears, Lavabe.

I was told it was a "formality" and "meaningless."

Lavabe has stated quite succinctly what this means in the world of SACS. Some cynics who may describe such a ruling as meaningless, but that's a comment of disengagement, not knowledge or understanding. ;;)

According to the AP, the real danger is not the loss of an ability to distribute diplomas, but it is the loss of the ability to receive federal funds. I apologize for my suggestion that the loss of accreditation would mean the inability to give degrees. However, it poses all sorts of problems, none of which UNC would EVER risk. If you are a Tier 1 research institute, those federal funds become VERY important.

I think Lawgrad is right in one important respect: I cannot imagine the UNC admin would let it get that far, so SACS really won't penalize UNC. UNC admin has been working with SACS, but SACS had to report what it found. In all fairness, I think it also highlights to the NCAA that bad stuff happened at UNC. Nonetheless, most universities comply when accreditors place them on probation.

In smaller schools, loss of SACS accreditation can be brutal. While we were in Atlanta, Morris Brown went through financial issues, lost SACS accreditation, and is just now starting to emerge. The Chronicle of Higher Ed (subscription) had a stinging piece about UNC today. If I am the NCAA, I look at the Wainstein Report, I look at SACS, and I find a pattern. I think things will only get resolved when UNC gets to restart, after complying with every item and sanction put forth by SACS and NCAA.

I think every carolina sports fan is thinking "Whew! We got away with it!" and probation from SACS means nothing to them. :9f:

What would be worse is if SACS simply said no penalty. If SACS had given no probation, the NCAA would have information to lower the athletic team penalty.

Do you think this means the NCAA will be even harsher on them?

I think you and I agree on one thing, Ozzie: I could give a rat's ass about Carolina sports fans. :D :9f:

I DO care about friends and family who work, teach, and learn there.

The University is getting federal dollars to support staff and research. Take away accreditation, and see what happens to the chances of getting federal funding. According to UNC's own data (http://research.unc.edu/about/facts-ran ... g/fy-2014/), the university took in roughly $792 million in federal research funding in Fiscal Year 2014, of which about 72% was from National Institutes of Health. That translates into jobs and research.

It isn't easy getting a federal student loan if your school is not accredited: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/prepare-fo ... s/consider. Since this is all new territory, I wonder if you can receive transfer credits from an unaccredited school. UNC has one year to fix it, and shouldn't let it get to that point.

One of the jobs of a university president is to protect the brand. This can't be any good for UNC. And well, academic scandals are NOT good for the ACC.

I think the average UNC staff, faculty, and student is not saying "We got away with it!" They are probably saying...FIX IT NOW!

I think it's corroboration, and gives justification for whatever stance the NCAA has about penalties. It makes things harder for UNC to bargain away from postseason bans, vacation of wins, fines, and scholarship reductions. A system of knowing NOTHING (Sergeant Schultz) or looking away at things in a unit of the university... championship teams... the NCAA may have little wiggle room when you consider one pure fact:

3100 students... 20 years.

GEEZ!! That's just SICK!! Have we EVER seen anything like this for that length of time?

What would make things easier for UNC to bargain down NCAA sanctions? New faces, more strict rules, and strong self-imposed sanctions would be a start. Show the NCAA that the culture has changed, and that newer, firmer guidelines are now in place.

I must wonder why unc failed to initiate self-sanctions. Did they think they would skate? Doesn't it make sense that they should have started doing everything possible to clean up their mess before the NCAA hands down its decision? Are they so delusional and arrogant that they believe they are not accountable?

"3100 students... 20 years". It's been even longer than that.

Well over 30 years ago we had a friend of our kids sit in our living room and tell us that his uncle (a prof at UNC) was teaching a class they would change the name of every year so that the athletes could take it over and over again for new credit. No end to the creativity. Bless their ingenious hearts.

You know, Ima... Perhaps you should write it down and send it to various folks at Sacs. Who knows??

I feel bad for the real students and real professors, even though it is carolina. What a slap in the face. It's also an embarrassment for the State of NC. I don't want them to lose accreditation. Like you said, Lavabe, so many people would lose their jobs and for research, it would be a disaster. As far as athletics, I feel the same. GTHC, GTH. :9f:

I wouldn't mind seeing the "death penalty" for a couple sports teams, but I definitely don't want to see them lose accreditation.
