2014 Fall Camp

I figured it was time for a new thread after wearing out the other few for this year's team. Last night the team reported for Fall Camp and will start practice this evening. Coach Cut had his Preseason Press Conference this morning and made a few announcements..
Starting TE Braxton Deaver will not join the team at camp until August 9th. Cutcliffe's explanation was that Braxton "had a few things to clear up and get right" before starting practice. Not sure if this is an academic issue or what, but obviously Braxton has been suspended for a few days of practice.
TE Dan Beilinson is out for an extended period of time after having surgery following a weight-room accident. Freshman Jonathan Lloyd is also out and will probably redshirt after recently having ankle surgery.
And backup DE Kyler Brown is limited for the first few days of camp with a sprained ankle.
Other than that the team is healthy and ready for fall practice. Hopefully we avoid any serious injuries during these intense weeks of physical practice. 26 days until Elon!

No shit. That was one of the reasons for having a successful season last year, for the most part we avoided the injury bug. Happily, those that were injured had reliable backups (Connette, as an example), so let's cross our fingers that this month goes well and safely.
Not sure what Deaver did to get suspended, but I like Cut's attitude about it. I'm sure the punishment is worthy of the crime; he has never been one to not play fair in the discipline department.

I have no idea what is going on with Deaver, but I am thinking it is minor and the situation will be squared away quickly because it stayed quiet over the summer. A big issue would have leaked. Deaver is an integral part of the offense so I really hope this is no big deal and Coach Cut is exercising some tough love to get his attention.

A little bit on Deaver, and Boone's perspective. As well as how it may actually help the team as a whole.
"He’s ready to come back, he’s ready to work, that’s the only mindset he has. He’s ready to come out here and prove to the team that he’s ready to play football."
In the meantime, David Reeves will get first team reps at tight end this week. Duke fans may remember him for his fourth-quarter tightrope, 21-yard touchdown reception against the Aggies. The hope, according to Boone, is that the Blue Devils emerge from this with a rock-solid backup tight end.

The first practice in full pads is on Saturday. In his press conference on Monday, Coach stated he would know a lot about the team by the middle of next week.

Here is a good practice recap from Steve Wiseman at the Herald Sun:

Braxton Deaver still in Coach Cut's Dog House but working his way out! Deaver is uber important to our offense.
1. LB Zavier Carmichael was impressive (ESPN had him as a 4*)
2. Josh Snead and Lucas Patrick are being evaluated after displaying concussion like symptoms
3. Coach Cutcliffe said the first team offense executed at a high level

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior, who led all ACC tight ends with 46 catches last season, practiced for the first time on Saturday after being held out of the opening week of fall camp for unspecified reasons.
Although the rest of the Blue Devils are already in full pads, Deaver will be held out of contact for a few days while he gets acclimated to being back on the field.

It starts:
Kelby Brown *left* the field with a knee injury. Carted off. MRI tonight
That's a tweet from Laura Keeley.

Saw this last night and was hoping it was a cruel joke. Worst possible news to come out of a scrimmage. Kelby is not only a great linebacker, his heart and leadership skills is what this team will miss if he is out for the season. I'm praying that this is just a sprain and he will be back by conference play.

From Duke Football's twitter account, Kelby Brown will miss the entire 2014 season after tearing his left ACL. Wow.

I think of Kenny Anunike's struggles with knee surgeries and hope Kelby has a similarly positive outcome.

Practice and scrimmages are necessary evils so I don't desire to emotionally over react but I really hope we can make it to August 30 with no more injuries. We need the injury front to mirror 2013 not 2012!

Well now is the time for someone to obviously step up. Out of curiosity, who came in Kelby's position and redshirted last year?
From the ESPN ACC blog,
With the loss of Brown, Duke's options at middle linebacker are a bit thin. Junior Deion Williams projects as the likely replacement. Williams has just one career start, coming last season against Navy. For the season, he recorded 17 tackles.
Ok...so Williams at least had one start and some tackles. (Being a non-starter I'm ok with his numbers.) But who is the young dude(s) behind him?
