One year legacies

Post by YmoBeThere » April 17th, 2014, 2:28 pm

Just curious how everyone feels about the legacies of players who have left early.

I'm not judging their actions, they have to make the best decision for themselves which obviously includes leaving Duke to go to the NBA.

But it does impact how I view them in the pantheon of players who have suited up for the alma mater.

Also, does the current era create a natural bias against today's players? Obviously today's opportunity set is different than it was in the Jim Spanarkel era.

I don't think you can have a legacy if you are only here one year.

Here are their legacies:

Austin Rivers: 0-1 in the NCAAT. Star player on a team that lost to Lehigh.
Kyrie Irving: 11 total games as a Blue Devil
Jabari Parker: 0-1 in the NCAAT. Star player on a team that lost to Mercer.

One and dones do not have a great track record at Duke in recent years. Luol Deng and Corey Maggette had more success at the beginning of the one and done era.

I do not hold it against them for leaving but I'd much rather discuss the legacies of players such as Shane Battier or Jon Scheyer. For the amount of money Parker is going to make next season in the NBA, I would've switched from the Navy to the Air Force.

JIMMY!!

I am totally disgusted with the proceedings of today. Those two players will mean nothing to me, either for their year at Duke or for their future NBA career.

This is what I wanted to point out. None left on a really high note.

But we do know that K recruits these kids knowing that they will only be in Durham for one year. He knew Parker and Okafor were one year wonders. I could argue that we could be just as good this year with two, less-talented big men rather than Jah. Recruiting one year players is not necessary to win a national championship. Just ask UCONN....
