Jela Duncan suspended until AFTER NEXT season!! Now we're down three major players going into the bowl. What in the world did he do to deserve THAT? According to what I read, it's not an NCAA issue, but purely a Duke one.

The nature of the punishment as a result of violating university academic policy (not football program's policies) suggests cheating, plagiarism or the like. ;;)

Unfortunately, what DitBD said is my guess too. :9f:

This is indeed NOT good news. Fortunately, we have used 4 RB this year and the remaining 3 have taken many snaps and averaged around 5 yards per carry this year. The staff apparently thinks Joseph Ajeigbe, a true freshman, will be very good, but I highly doubt Cut will burn his 'shirt for just one game.

Wow, that stinks. Fortunately, we do have other good options at RB, so it will hurt to lose him, but won't be disastrous. Jela, I am very disappointed in you, young man! :naughty: :(

Too bad for sure! But I'm with Ima - glad Duke handled it on their own swiftly and surely!

So sad to read about Jela. Our leading rusher.

With all of the Tutors and academic help to the athletes, there is no excuse for cheating, or flunking out of school.

We are down 3.5 starters for the Bowl Game. Perry Simmons (out ACL), Jela Duncan (suspended), Brandon Connette (family leave, for now) and Dwayne Norman sits out for the First Half of the Bowl from the BS call from the Fsu Acc game.

Zack Asack was suspended by Ted Roof, 2 times. As gifted as Zack was, and being a smart person, there was no reason for him to cheat on his papers. And we all know how Thad Lewis became our Starting QB, and on to the NFL!!!!

Other players have been suspended also. Lyndsey Harding and Chloe Wells were suspended from the Girls Basketball teams. But both came back!

I hope Jela can learn a valuable lesson, from this and move forward. Very unfortunate for our Football team to lose another young man.

Question???

Why does Jela Duncan have to sit out 3 semesters? If the norm, is 2 (Spring 2014, Summer 2014)..... why would he not be able to return Fall 2014?

My guess is that summer doesn't count. Although, had he done his cheating in the summer, that surely would have counted. Seems like it would work both ways. Beats me.

The nature of the offense(s) as defined by the University's rules determines the punishment. I've not followed the evolution of these rules, but they and the punishments do change over the years. Given the confidentiality which prevails regarding such situations, our attempts at comparisons may be a case of "apples and oranges" though they appear the same based on what we know. ;;)

According to post I read at The Devils Den, from a current Duke student, the norm for cheating is 3 semesters so he cannot return until Spring 2015. If it was only failing grades, he would be eligible to return in Fall 2014, after 2 semesters. There is no conspiracy here. Rules are rules.

The question on the table here is why doesn't the summer session count as a semester for sentencing purposes since cheating done during the summer session would surely count and result in the same sentence.

Not arguing, just wondering.

The summer session does count. He is suspended 3 semesters: Spring 2014, Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 and is eligible to re-enroll in January 2015.

It does count, doesn't it? He is out this spring, this summer, and this fall. He can enroll in the spring once again after three semesters out.
Edit....oops, missed Bob's post.

Aren't there TWO summer sessions?

I think so! But since each session is a month, both sessions combined equal 1 semester.

If you fail courses, you sit out 2 semesters. And if you cheat in college, you sit out 3 semesters (which is an entire calendar year). Wow!!

I hope all of Jela's teammates learn a valuable lesson from his mistake, and do their school work (tutors available and lab) and be model Duke classmates.
There is a Price to Pay when you are found guilty of wrong doing, whether it be in the CLASSROOM or COURTROOM!! Bless his heart!

There are two sessions. The number of courses one may take each session is less than the number of courses one would take in a semester during the regular academic year. ;;)
