What is a grinder?

I am not an attorney, although I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

In the non-legal world (in case this is a legal question) a grinder is another term for a sub sandwich.

Grinder, Hoagie, Sub, Hero ...

it is all the same .. occasional a po' boy, spuckie and a wedge too

same food, different region (although wedges tend to be hot...as in meatball or sausage)

Sorry, I spent my day driving to Chesapeake and back, fetching Mom for Christmas. So I missed this earlier.

We had chicken for our staff meeting/Christmas party. But having spent much time at Greater Grinders in Tidewater, I was aware of what a grinder is.

A h yes, yet another opportunity to demonstrate blind loyalty to provincial vocabulary. Would be an interesting exercise to color in a map of the US to match the regions where each term is dominant. For example, in my experience:

In Pennsylvania (surprisingly enough, both ends of the Commonwealth are in agreement here), the sandwich in question is correctly called a hoagie. A grinder is a hoagie that goes in the oven for a few minutes to give some crunch to the roll and make the cheese all melty-oogly-googly (technical gourmet term). If you want a sub, go to a General Dynamics boatyard and bring a security clearance and a check with lots and lots of zeros.

A hero (the sandwich kind) is generally found in the metro NYC area. Po'boys are the classic Nawlins sammich featuring fried shrimp, oysters, or catfish, plus a special kind of mayo.

Spuckie and wedge are new terms for me. Either I haven't been in those parts of the country or I was busy eating something else...

Why would a grinder be referred to in a citation as drug paraphernalia?

Oh, THAT kind of grinder. Grinders are used to grind up marijuana prior to rolling and smoking it. Will Graves' grinder was probably right next to his blunts, or it wouldn't have been bothered with by the PO-PO.

I grew up with 'wedge' since I am from Putnam County NY, aNd I have only heard spuckie once or twice..in Boston. Wikipedia says:

Ground weed and grinder sandwiches go well together. (I bet.)

LG is correct. Grinders can be made from wood or metal and usually about 2-3 inches in diameter. The metal ones can have multiple compartments, one for the regularly ground green leafy substance and the compartment below which catches the fine shavings also known as 'keef' which tends to be highly potent (so i'm told).

Chip, do people still smoke weed in Patrick Co.? I thought they'd all switched to meth.

haha alas, a lot have switched but we do have some straggler hippies from Floyd that keep the green torch glowing!

So the more finely ground it is, the more potent the stuff becomes because it's all packed together with little space for air?

yeah it basically gives you more bang for the buck / makes it burn more efficiently.
