Must see/do ideas for St.Louis

Post by fordgrl00 » July 3rd, 2013, 4:59 pm

Hey everyone!

I hope all your summers are off to a good start! (I am jealous of everyone who has been to the beach already)

I am venturing out to St.Louis on Saturday and while July 6th and 7th are basically already planned out for family stuff going on I was curious of ideas for must see places to go or eat at while we are there. We only have a few days but I am hopefully to hit some good spots. I don't know of what to do there beyond going to a Cardinals game which will be Sunday. We will be traveling between Branson/Springfield/ and St.Louis areas. Please chime in with any advice, touristy or local must do's. :D (I will be fairly busy the next few days so may not be able to respond timely but will keep tabs on comments here as usual) I will prob get around to posting facebook pictures while I am there too!

Thanks!

MoBot, Top o' the Arch, Ted Drewe's, Schlafly's, O'Fallon's, Urban Chestnut and a few others that I can't remember because it's been a decade or more since I've been there.
[redacted] them and the horses they rode in on.

For the best Italian food you'll ever have, find a restaurant on "The Hill", the Italian neighborhood section of St. Louis.

Okay, I didn't read your original post very closely. In my defense it was early.

Venture a bit further west to the Kansas City area and I'll treat you to BBQ.

Alright, so here are some things to do:
1) Non-food related: Arch, Missouri Botanical Gardens, Laclede's Landing (riverfront area), Forest Park (especially if you have access to a bicycle), Baseball (although this too could be food related), Brewery Tour (this would be drink related), the University City Loop (DEFINITLY also food related), Powell Symphony Hall/Fox Theatre area, Central West End (food/shops).
2) Italian Food (the Hill): Favazza's, Zia's, Cunetto's, Amighetti's (Lunch--sandwiches/bakery). Please note that most salads on the Hill include provel cheese, a sweet white processed cheese food that is sort of a signature cheese of St. Louis. Toasted raviolli is also a signature St. Louis appetizer.
3) Other food: UCity Loop: Near WashU, this is the eclectic college-y strip that has loads of different things available to eat. Blueberry Hill is the signature college beer/burger/fries/just about everything you had in college joint, but with a lot of kitsch. Memorabilia is in abundance... check out the walk of fame.
4) Other food: Well, dessert-wise, it's Ted Drewe's. There's a LOT more, but I will defer to throaty/Arkie.
5) Other food-like stuff: Schlafly's Tap Room: A MUST.
6) Other food: there's a lot more than the Hill in St. Louis. I love some of the south St. Louis stuff by Tower Grove Park. Last time, I enjoyed a Nicaraguan place. Loads of good Asian places too.
7) Avoid chain restaurants.
8) The Metro-Link system is NICE. Use it, when possible (I wish it covered more of the city).

Again... I defer to throaty and Arkie for much of this. I just wanted to chime in before you left.
Cheers,

Lavabe did a great job with his list. I am a bit surprised that he didn't suggest Imo's Pizza, the standard for St. Louis style pizza. It has provel cheese on it. Melted provel seems a bit plasticky to me, but many swear by it. You really should go to the Hill and get toasted ravioli.
