plural of "chicken"

Post by Ima Facultiwyfe » February 22nd, 2013, 4:06 pm

Okay, once more to the fount of knowledge and the final word of all things that is the CTN board.

A very smart person I know corrected me last night when I used the word "chickens" in a sentence. She said the plural of chicken is still "chicken". I can't verify that anywhere. Anybody? I did read somewhere that historically in England, farmers would use the singular form in referring to their stock of poultry. But, that seems pretty far removed from modern day English if you ask me.

Isn't there a linguist expert OY? Can't remember who that is.

My understanding is as follows:

Plural of chicken the bird is chickens. I have 100 chickens on my farm.
Plural of chicken the food is chicken. I have a bucket of chicken.

That makes perfect sense and I agree. I'm NOT going to give in on my argument. I knew one of you would back me up! Thanks!

Wikipedia has a pretty good article on chicken, the animal. Note how many times the plural chickens appears.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken

Now on the topic of chicken, the food, here an article which uses the form chicken exclusively.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_%28food%29

These sources were readily available though I would have appreciated a more scholarly treatment of the matter. ;;)

Somehow, we must figure out a way to incorporate this into this thread, too:
