Does wilson get a research thread?

I leave in the morning for a month in my archive in Charleston, followed by a month in the State Archives in Columbia. This means that, by Labor Day, my dissertation will (hopefully) be mapped out. It will be very exciting couple of months for me. I'd love to share thoughts, though I'm not sure how exciting old manuscripts will be in comparison to Lavabe's jungle adventures. My thread would probably consist of heavy amounts of "Let me tell you about the awesome beachy place where I 'worked' all day, surrounded by southern belles."
Anyway, if y'all want, I'll sticky another research thread (but it really won't hurt my feelings not to do one). I'm a mod...I can do those sorts of things. ;)

Sadly, I don't think this round of research will include too much about pirates, but talking/writing about it to a non-specialist audience will actually help me focus the project a lot. I'll get the thread up in the next few days...not much will happen until next week, as the archive is closed Fri and Sat for the 4th.
And seriously, it means a lot that y'all really are interested in what I do.

Remind me, what are you researching? IIRC, you are studying maritime history.

Be ye therefore exceedingly careful amongst the wilds of Bikini Beach and the hordes of wild inhabitants of the SC low country, even more so in that capital city.
Post at will. It would be read.

Don't hold your breath. You are more likely to find so much stuff that you'll feel like you're drowning in it. Just copy as much as you possibly can, even if it doesn't seem relevant. Once you return home you can go through all of it and begin to map things out. Better to have too much info than too little. And, if you take digital images of the documents, use Acrobat to convert them all to .pdf files when you return as they are much easier to deal with when reading through the material.
It will be very exciting couple of months for me. I'd love to share thoughts, though I'm not sure how exciting old manuscripts will be in comparison to Lavabe's jungle adventures.
To me, old manuscripts are very exciting. Then again, you could probably have guessed that already.

I'll try to keep any of my own comments in the non-specialist vein. The last thing you need is someone questioning your source-base, etc. as we historians are in the habit of doing.
Just always keep in mind that your intended audience will be comprised of specialists.

Thanks for the tips, colchar.
For those who asked, my project concerns intercolonial trade in and out of Charleston between roughly the 1730s and 1750s. I'm particularly interested in evolving human geographies; that is, the changing ways in which people interacted with the physical landscape and the cultural footprint of human inhabitance (be it European/creole, African/African-American, or Native American). Networks of exchange--commercial, informational, cultural, etc. are important to the project.
