Summing up this coming weekend as best we can...

Post by Native » October 5th, 2012, 11:34 am

I wonder where this came from?

We got a more central location this time, using the corner of Kilgo just before you walk onto the Bryan Center Plaza from the Main Quad. Every student on West will see this at some point today or tomorrow. Let's hope the message gets through loud and clear!

Can't tell from the picture, is there an "S" on the end of his name? Wouldn't want to insult him by spelling his name wrong.

Hopefully, the Student Section is packed! Hopefully, every section of Wallace Wade is packed! Of course, the selfish side of me likes leaning back against the empty seats behind me, while kicking my feet up on the empty seats in front of me. :|

Go Duke! Whip the Wahoos!

Um, Native, I think putting up the banner to woo the recruit is an NCAA violation. Seriously, I remember a couple of years ago that a living group was asked, no, told, to take down a similar banner. Call someone and ask! :9f:

He's right. Bright side, you can easily cut off the bottom half. However...Ozzie has a 100% track record with cutouts. So make him one.

I just read the rules, and I can't figure out why the banner would be a violation. But what do I know?

Edit: Here's where I think you might be in trouble:

Boosters CANNOT
•... have any "recruiting" contact with prospects or their families. That includes phone calls, letters, emails and face-to-face meetings.
•... provide financial aid of any kind or in any amount (clothing, discounts, gifts, transportation, loans, etc.) to prospects or their relatives.
•... have any contact with a prospect or his/her parents during an official or unofficial recruiting visit
•... contact any recruit to offer congratulations on the signing of a National Letter of Intent
•... employ or arrange for the employment of any prospect before the completion of his/her senior year
•... provide anything to a prospect or prospect's family or friends without approval from the school compliance office

It's a close call, but I can see how it might be problematic.

Also, here is the definition of a BOOSTER:

A booster is one who "represents the athletic interests" of a specific program. In the eyes of the NCAA, that can mean a one who:
•Joins a "booster club" that promotes a given team or athletic program
•Makes a financial contribution to a program's athletic department -- no matter the amount
•Buys season tickets in any sport
•Provides any benefit (a summer job for a player, for example) to a student-athlete
If you meet any of those criteria -- even if you made a $20 donation 25 years ago -- you're considered a booster -- and that label never goes away.

So that includes everyone at Duke.

Then how is it that the Crazies are allowed to wave at and yell the visiting recruit's name in Cameron, followed by "COME TO DUKE!!! ?" (Then the recruit usually smiles and waves back across the floor.) Isn't that much more direct contact than a sign hanging somewhere on campus that he may or may not see?

Moreover, the crowd is encouraged to "give him a warm welcome".

I agree, though -- better check it out. There are way dumber rules than this one that are easily overlooked.

I think the rules are vague on purpose. I think the rules are enforced selectively.

You wouldn't believe how difficult it was for me to find the rules online yesterday. I don't think that the NCAA is being particularly transparent.

Did anyone see Austin Nichols on campus yesterday?
