Third Down Improvement

Post by CameronBornAndBred » October 3rd, 2012, 12:18 pm

For years it has seemed like Duke's answer (regardless of the coaching staff) has been on any third down play to aim for at least two yards short. Gawd-awful screen passes, running laterally, whatever. Something has finally clicked and we've seen marked improvement since the second half of the Memphis game. Here's Cut's thoughts.
“We emphasized not just getting to the sticks but knowing where the sticks are, catching the ball and getting upfield and just better knowing our down and distance,” backup quarterback Anthony Boone said. “Just kind of having pre-snap awareness, letting our receivers know so they kind of have an idea of what we’re going to think.”

The article talks about how the plays now for short yardage are runs vs passing for anything we need over 4 yards for..also a good step (as long as it's not a 2 yard pass, grrrrr). I loved watching in more than one 3rd and long against Wake and convert them, it was like looking into a mirror since that is usually what happens against us!
Duke born, Duke bred, cooking on a grill so I'm tailgate fed.
