He was a true American hero.

Do you remember where you were when they announced "The Eagle has landed?" We were on highway 117 headed down to Holden Beach. For years and years, we could point to the tree that we passed when we heard that announcement. Then, they opened I-40. . .

My folks rented a color TV to take to the beach that summer. The house we were renting cost $75 per week to rent. The TV cost $100 per week. Mom and Dad and my aunt and uncle wanted to watch the historic coverage of the moon landing in color. You cannot imagine how disappointed they were when the coverage of the moon landing was done only in black and white.

I remember that they woke all of us up in the middle of the night to watch Neil Armstrong descend from the lunar module and walk on the moon. Was it really the middle of the night, or was it about 11:00-ish and it seemed like it was the middle of the night because I was only 7 years old?

That afternoon I was in Fenway Park watching the O's beat the Red Sox. Neil was on the moon (along with Buzz Aldrin)! The moon walk occurred between 11 pm and midnight, maybe a little later. I remember being in the dining hall at the Ted Williams Baseball Camp, trying to see the 13" screen from halfway across the room. I'd have had more luck looking up at the moon... ;)

We were with a bunch of NASA folks and their families' watching on TV at Lewis in Cleveland.

For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.

RIP. Thoughts and prayers to the family. We have lost a true hero.

I was home with Donna, Dana, Jake and Dawn, our children. It was amazing. At the same time, Bud and 3 other divers were in the hyperbaric chamber at Duke, making another world record. They dived to 2,132 ft. From start to finish, the dive was almost a month long. It took "forever" for them to decompress.

RIP Neil Armstrong.

I think we did.

I may have my $ amounts off, but I know that my folks paid more for the TV than they did for a week's rental on a beach cottage. And the dang moon walk wasn't shown in color.
