Pet Peeves

I got a letter today which began as follows:

"Dear Ms. Thompson,

My name is __________ and I am looking for a job. . . "

DUH. I can find your name. It's usually typed and signed at the bottom of the page under the word "Sincerely."

This is one of my pet peeves. Why do people begin their letters with "My name is _________" when I can find it at the bottom of the page? ~X(

What about the rest of you? Do you all have pet peeves?

In this economy, I suspend some of my peeves. If, however, they spell your name incorrectly, or if they don't know the name of the company, peeve away! :)

This evening while driving home, I was behind someone who had a cigarette in their right hand, I could see them reaching across their body while they had the cigarette. So, their smoke was now outside their car and they were tapping their ashes on the road. If you can't handle the smoke in your car, then quit smoking!

I had a moron flick his cigarette on my car this week. I followed him for a while. Apparently he got nervous because he really started speeding. I then made the turn I needed to get to my destination...

Pet peeves? I've got a ton of them...

- People who reply to an email I wrote - one in which I wrote my name at the end - and begin it by spelling my name wrong.
- Beginning a statement with "Currently today..."
- Non-native English speakers who "correct" my corrections in their documentation (I'm the Technical Writer on the project and it's my job to review documentation before it's released).
-Single item bullet "lists"
- People who have to have the last word - even when they have run out of useful points to contribute. (which makes me think I should stop now)

I shudder when the pilot says we will be in the air "momentarily".

It would be worse if he said you'd be airborne "only momentarily"...

"Momentarily" IS 'only' momentarily, meaning FOR a moment, not IN a moment.

Also, while I'm at it,if one doesn't feel good about something, then he feels "bad" about it. To say he feels "badly" just means he's a bad feeler! That one drives me nuts! %-(

On the business/office front:
Presenters who read their PowerPoint slides - I am fluent in English. I read well. If all you are going to do is read the slides you're showing give me the freakin' deck and I will read it myself in 1/10 the time.

In airports:
Waiting until you get to the front of the security line to start digging out your id/boarding pass/laptop/liquids. This is not a suprise inspection people. Please read the giant signs and plan ahead, also those lace up 'army boots' were a poor footwear choice.

Dining Out
Use of my debit card has almost made this one obsolete but it stills annoys me:
Servers who a)ask if I want change (no sweetie...I gave you a $20 on a $9.40 bill - you think you're tip is going to exceed the meal cost? Dream on) and b)given the configuration above bring my a $10, two quarters and a dime. Good serves always make sure you have enough change to tip them - it should be a 5, 5 ones and coin. Enjoy your .60 tip.

Driving
Slower traffic please keep right. That is all.

I always wanted to be an engineer, now i are one.

But back to my point, I take the first statement as referring to the time interval before being airborne, and the second as to the length of time actually being airborne.

Maybe this should be moved to the LTE, if only momentarily! Would you feel badly if it were? :-B

I do hope we were only momentarily under the plane, while it was momentarily still in the air, before it permanently crashed to the ground on top of whatever was permanently squished beneath it. And that would permanently squeeze the peeve, and everything else, out of me.

I wonder if I could find another thread to merge this one with. Just for Ozzie.

At our Commonwealth Attorneys' conferences, the norm is for the presenter to read the PowerPoint which is not only directly in front of us on a large screen, but in front of us in a gigantic book as well. X(

Last year, for the first time, we had the option of the PowerPoints being printed and assembled in a book, or given to us on a CD-ROM. I get the CD, even though my work computer won't run them (see today's rant in the "Good Morning" thread) and I use an iPad and a MacAir Pro, neither of which has a CD reader. The only disadvantage to not getting a giant notebook is that I have no place to hide a crossword puzzle book, but since I've bought the NYT Crosswords app for the iPad, it's no longer an issue. :happy-bouncyblue:

Hey, I started and deleted a thread earlier this morning when I found out I was wrong about something that I was really excited about. X( X( X( Don't know if anyone saw it before I deleted it. I started the same thread OY, where someone pointed out the error of my ways, which I then verified, and even, God help me, asked the mods to delete the thread (before some schmuck dinged me a bunch of zpork points). They did, and my precious 566 points remained intact! :happy-bouncyblue: :D B-) =))
