Canister Vacuum recommendation?

Our grad-school-grade vacuum has called it quits, and it's time to get a new one.

My husband is our chief vacuum operator, and he prefers canister vacuums which I don't have any experience with. But since it'll be mostly him vacuuming, who am I to argue with him?

Any recommendations? Any models we should avoid?

Budget isn't a huge concern, but we don't want to spend more than we have to.

All our common areas are tile (living/family room, dining area--which we turned into our media center, kitchen). Carpet is just in the bedrooms and on the stairs.

Our daughter has allergy issues, so I guess a HEPA filter would be nice although we may also get a dedicated filter for her bedroom.

We don't have pets, so getting up pet hair isn't an issue. We're mostly going after kid dirt and sock fuzz.

Thanks!!

I have a Dyson that I bought refurbished on ebay. I love, love, love my Dyson. I have 4 pets so bought the Dyson for animal hair/fur, I have no doubt that any other Dyson will be just as good.

I second Tilly's Dyson recommendation. We have had one for 7-8 years with no problems whatsoever. And it picks up more dirt than any we have ever used. Also has a HEPA filter. I do not think it would be classified as a canister model but more of an upright. But it has the capability to remove the wand thingy and vacuum the steps. You can't go wrong with a Dyson.

Dyson. Dyson. Dyson. That's pretty much the recommendation we've gotten elsewhere too. We'll see how the buying goes.

Thanks!

I have a central vacuum system. The motor is Electrolux. I love it! When I had my first apartment, I used my Grandmother's old Electrolux canister. That vacuum worked like a charm.

Electrolux sucks. I highly recommend them.

We've had a Dyson canister vac for 5 years and love it! I grew up with Electrolux and those are awesome too.

I grew up with Electrolux, also. Was there any other brand then?
