While you were away ...

Post by Lavabe » June 24th, 2009, 7:26 am

This always happens to me when I go to do field work:
1) Something happens;
2) The news cycle runs its course;
3) It's gone from public discourse by the time I return.

What should I be aware of that's happening in North American pop culture, sports, news, that will be gone from public discourse by the time I return in mid-August?

Examples: Miss California, Tiger Woods not winning the US Open, etc...

Thanks,
Lavabe

Ed McMahon passed away yesterday. :(

The other big pop culture news is that Jon and Kate of "Jon and Kate Plus 8" reality show fame are getting a divorce. I've never watched the show myself (and never will), but it's all I see on internet news sites. Hopefully that will be out of the news cycle when you return.

I just finished reading through over 200 office emails I got while I was gone.

The NBA draft is tomorrow night and the NHL draft is Friday night. There will also likely be plenty of trades in both leagues before you return. Some politician will make a faux pas of some kind that will have blown over by the time you return. Jumbo will be a complete dick over at DBR and that will have blown over as well. That one, however, will be repeated ad nauseum...

SC Governor disappeared without telling anyone - staff, family, Lt. Governor. Staff said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail (on Nudist Hiking the AT weekend). Then he claimed to have been driving along the coast in Argentina. Turns out he is having an affair with an Argentinian woman and his family has known about it for several months.

Has that been officially announced? I was under the impression it would happen at the draft tonight.

Ya know, ever since Lavabe started this thread, there has been tons of bad news. I think this thread needs to be closed, or maybe even deleted.

The Raptors fucked up their draft pick. But that shouldn't come as news as it happens regularly.
