Kudos to Duke - We're Feeling the Love

I gotta say, being the parent of a newly accepted Duke student is fun! Mr. BD and I both got 'Welcome to Duke' emails. They even have a website for us. Until he's delivered to his dorm room I have permission to keep track of Andrew's college related emails. He gets an email almost everyday from Duke. We all feel like we're being recruited.
(To be fair, Emory was better in the pre-acceptance phase but Duke is winning hands down now.)

Do they have a basketball team at Emory?

Are you coming to one of the Blue Devil Days?

No, Andrew's ultimate frisbee team is in full swing right now and not only does he not want miss any school, he really doesn't want to miss any ultimate frisbee games now that he's finally made the varsity team. He told me that he felt he'd visited Duke enough times to make his decision without going to Blue Devil Days.

Emory is part of the University Athletic Association (Division III), along with WashU, and a number of similarly positioned private R-1 institutes: Brandeis, Carnegie-Mellon, NYU, Rochester, Wash U, Emory, Chicago, and Case Western.
They indeed have a basketball team... and baseball, softball, volleyball, track, swim, and more.
They lack an American football team; they have world football (soccer).
Emory has some high-achieving student athletes. I know I had several who applied for NCAA graduate scholarships when they graduated.
The swim team was full of high achievers.
Emory doesn't have the same focus that Duke has on sports. It's Division III. Division III is a LOT of fun.
What really stands out about the Division III student athletes is that they TRULY appreciate when faculty, parents, and fellow students attend the sporting events. Most of the ones I taught at Emory have gone on to good careers, med school, law school, and grad school.

They have top-ranked PA program too!

Looks like Swee'Pea is trying to clear the decks for the Blue Devil days for accepted students this Thurs and Fri. She's narrowed down to two choices: a free ride at Pitt's honors program vs. a generous but fairly standard aid package at Duke. She's thinking pre-med, so the theory in play is that it's better to get through undergrad without debt and go for more prestige in med school.

Getting through undergrad without debt was probably the best decision I made as a teenager. I loved my time at Duke but the freedom of graduating debt free was so sweet. Instead of taking a lucrative job in the financial sector afterwards, I went and taught English in Kazakhstan. That was a great experience which informed what I actually do now (as a linguist with a focus on second language learning).
Whatever she decides, a huge congrats on her many successes already!!

Good decision.

Quick update on my Swee'Pea; after much hemming and hawing between Duke and Pitt, and waiting until the last minute, she has decided to accept the Chancellor's Scholarship to Pitt's University Honors College.
We had a blast at Blue Devil Days a couple weeks back, and it was a privilege to wander around campus for two days. When the kids were going to an improv show at East, I popped over to Dain's Place for a bit of supper, and we met an old friend for lunch at Satisfaction the next day. We both definitely felt the love!
In all honesty, I find it bittersweet despite being a win-win-win situation. As a high school kid who used to "borrow" books from Pitt's Hillman Library, I still have some residual cognitive dissonance about how Pitt is now a desired destination for top-end students in the Commonwealth. I know I was looking forward to the automatic visits to Durham every year that I've never been quite able to schedule on my own (bringing the golf clubs and Pennsylvania microbrews to share, of course!). But I still carry a torch for my hometown, and she'll have a safety net of Turks should she ever need it. Also, with Pitt joining the ACC, I'll get to see Duke's away games in the 'Burgh. ROAD TRIP!!

Congratulations, Turk & SweePea!
I hope the Turk clan takes full advantage of the education at Pitt. It's a dynamite school.

Congratulations to Swee'Pea and all of the Turks.
How cool is it that she'll be going to school close to home? I highly recommend that!

Congratulations to SweetPea and all of the Turk clan.
If you ever have extra tickets for a Duke v Pitt game, don't forget the "aunt" in Kansas.

Congratulations to Young Turk, and the whole Turk family! As much as we would've liked the other decision, certainly a Chancellor's Scholarship to the Honors Program is not to be taken lightly.
