Bobby Petrino in a spot of trouble

Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino was involved in a motorcycle over the weekend. According to the police report and statements made in a press conference on Monday, no one else was involved in the accident. Turns out he lied. He had a passenger on the motorcycle: a 25 year old former U of A volleyball player, employed as an administrator within the football program. Uh oh.

Okay; correction: ESPN is saying that the female passenger was listed on the police report. Why, then, did Petrino lie in the press conference? Tres bizarre.

Maybe he was meaning that nobody else was involved as in no other vehicles. Or maybe he's just a dumbass.

Dumbass. The Arkansas athletic director found out that Petrino lied to him on Thursday. Petrino called him to fess up just before the details became public. To say that he was unhappy is an understatement. Petrino is currently on paid administrative leave.

From Petrino's statement, it appears that he had an affair at some point with his young, blonde, current administrative staff member, and was trying to protect his family. Yeah, hiring her as a staff member will sure keep those details under wraps. And, no, it doesn't look suspicious at all if you lie to the press and to your boss. Dude could very well get fired over this. Yeah, I think dumbass just about covers it.

"In hindsight, I showed a serious mistake in judgment when I chose not to be more specific about those details," Petrino said Thursday in the statement, as reported by KARK.

Petrino apologized to his wife and four children, the university, his colleagues, students and "the entire state of Arkansas."

He said he hoped to repair relationships with his family and the university and remain head coach of the Razorbacks, adding "I'm a total dumbass".

I completely made that last line up.

There's more. Jessica Dorrell is engaged to be married, but not to Bobby Petrino. She's engaged to this guy:

The sun blinded him as he rounded the corner! Yeah, yeah, that's right - it was the sun. He doesn't know how he lost control of the motorcycle. The sun was in his eyes, he felt the wheels slipping; next thing he knew he was in a woodpile in the ditch. (his story to the cops) Being cynical, I suspect Cathy's version might be a bit more correct.

Yeah, and did you see that this guy is also a coach at U of A? Not football, though.

Things are about to get nasty.

We Atlanta Mafioso told you way back when that Petrino was an accident waiting to happen.

Dude needs to be removed from the college and professional settings. L-)

Press conference is on right now; unfortunately I can't watch it.

He deserved to be fired. He lied to his boss, and he hired his alleged mistress to a position on his staff. What a total dumbass.

My older sister is watching the whole thing live, and someone said on Twitter that Jeff Long (Arkansas AD) wanted to keep Petrino but they couldn't agree to terms. My guess based on some things I read earlier is a possible paycut and a loss of complete autonomy over the football program. Sorry, but if you're going to hire your alleged mistress to fill a position on your staff, you don't deserve complete autonomy over your program. Dumbass.

ESPN is also speculating that Bobby Petrino will never be able to coach in the college ranks again. I suspect someone will hire him simply because there's some program out there who's more desperate to win than to hire a coach with ethics. We can all come up with a long and distinguished list of coaches who have been hired for multiple jobs despite less than stellar track records regarding NCAA compliance. However, if the ESPN talking heads are correct, that makes Petrino an even bigger dumbass (assuming he really did refuse to negotiate with Long).

Interesting bit of trivia: reading comments on local news stations in Arkansas, women wanted to keep Petrino and men were saying that he should be fired. I thought the opposite would be true. The "Keep Petrino" camp's argument was that he's a good coach and his personal life is his own business. The "Fire Petrino" camp cited his lying to the boss. Put me squarely in the "Fire Petrino" camp.
