We are seriously considering getting a home security system. I know very little about them. Can any of you give me advice? I will greatly appreciate anything you have to share.

Thanks. That doesn't help if we're not home.

Well, there's always the trip-wire set-up. Some 'Rube Goldberg', 'Mouse Trap' system of capture.

:D

Seriously, are you asking about professional services or a DIY camera surveillance deal?

My personal home security systems weighs just over two hundred pounds and sports 126 teeth.

My mother has an ADT system for YEARS and has been very happy with it. She has cats, so she doesn't use motion dectors she has all the windows and doors plus the glass shattering detection. She just got the remote turn on/off on her smart phone. She's been pleased with service the few occassions she had issues (when she went to voip for her phone she needed a new main control) and the response time when the alram has gone off.

Are you and Mr. Very Duke Blue members of USAA? USAA is an organization for members of the military, past and present. If not, you should sign up with them as you get a discount on ADT. www.usaa.com

We are looking into USAA now. We have Allstate. They give a 10% discount.

Wow. That's a big puppy. My concern is mostly when we are out of town. Harley is not here when we are gone. Thank's for the info on your mom's system. What does voip stand for?

Voice Over Internet Protocol = VOIP
Internet based phone systems, like Vonage and Skype. I've had Vonage for many years and love it! They have one feature that no one else has - Simultaneous Ring. Call my work number and the call rings on my cell phone SIMULTANEOUSLY! It is different from call forwarding as both ring at the same time, and I can answer either (if I'm at home). If anyone wants a referral, we both get a month or two of free service (and you get free equipment). B-)

You can get cameras and video recorders, but they are without alert systems. Since you said "Probably professional", I'd tend to go that way.

I don't think you need insurance through USAA to take advantage of the discount with ADT.

Dogs have 42 teeth. 200lbs and 126 teeth is 3 dogs. The 90 lbs lab will knock them down..the Tervuren and standard poodle will shred them.

In Chapel Hill we use Digital Security out of Raleigh. Not many bells and whistles but it does okay and the folks are responsive. I liked them because the salesman was honest about telling us what areas were critical and what made no sense to add on.

At the lake we use Sentry Watch.I think they sold us on things we didn't need but I was naive at the time and the OP is paranoid. It does have some nice features we use since we aren't there very much. We can program by phone, etc. Like say, turning it off and on from home if a repairman is showing up there or bypassing one or more stations temporarily.. It's been fine, too. Each of them costs us around $300 a year.

Love, Ima

Yes, it's digital - it's one's and zero's transmitted over the internet. Now that you have a "real" internet connection at home, you could get it to replace your analog (phone company) phone line, or as an additional line. But most security systems can't use it for some reason - they need analog lines.

Thanks for the info Ozzie. I guess we're stuck with analog.

Securities systems CAN use digital (voip) phone lines. My mothers does, my uncles does (both are ADT) my mother did have to replace her 15 year old control box with a new one when she went digital, but she has no problem with the system./
