My mom has been having some health problems for a while now, and they've finally reached a point where the family (mainly my younger sister) is stepping in to do something about it. My brother's significant other, who is a nurse, thinks that my mom may have Parkinson's. She went to her doctor today to have some preliminary tests run, and she has an appointment with a specialist at a longevity clinic early next week. Please send lots of vibes that the problem will be something that can be treated with medication.

In one of those instances of "it's really funny how things work out," my brother's significant other wouldn't even be in the picture if not for the ugly divorce he went through last year. She happens to work in a nursing home, so she has some experience to back up her suspicions. It's a blessing that we have someone around my mom with enough expertise to pick up on a few signs that the rest of us would not have attributed to Parkinson's (or something related). In any event, we now know which direction to head.

And Kudos to your brother's SO for speaking up, as she may otherwise have felt it wasn't her place to say anything or make a recommendation to get your mother help. It may be her less-biased eye that also allowed her to see/notice something about your mother, that your family members may have just thought "normal" or didn't see because it came on slowly enough.

Thanks, all! We're not telling mom about the potential diagnosis just yet. The symptoms all fit Parkinson's, but there are a few other things it could be as well. We'll let the real medical professionals figure out what's going on. Until then, we'll just fret and stress. Bet all of you can identify.

No matter what it turns out to be, she's a lucky, lucky lady to have you terrific kids. And you are all fortunate to have each other. No doubt in my mind you all have what it takes to handle everything in the very best way.
