Losing is bad...but being is a sore loser is worse

Post by CameronBornAndBred » January 14th, 2012, 6:07 pm

Williams took his team — except for five walk-ons who finished the game — from the court with 14.2 seconds left in expectation of the court-storming by the Florida State fans.
WOW..I missed the game but heard he did this. Storming or not...that's pretty dispicable.

I think it was okay that the players from the bench left, but I think it was pretty awful that Williams went to the locker room with them. What kind of message does that send to the 5 walk-ons that remained on the court?

I agree with the people who are talking about imposing sanctions for schools that allow fans to storm the court before the opposing players have had a chance to leave. Does someone have to get hurt before the conference does something?

I don't think there was any stopping the fans from storming the floor. I think safety was the reason for getting the majority of the team off the floor. Why Willimas went with them? Who knows. I would have thought he would have stayed and waited for the the players on the floor. Weird. Tarhools are weird. :D

I think the whole lot of them should have stayed. The starters and players who get the most minutes caused that mess; why should the guys with good hair who keep the academic standards up be the only ones subjected to a possible onslaught?

Saying that, if ol' Roy thought one of the Seminole fans might break John Henson in half, he himself should have stayed with the five who remained, and sent the assistant coaches with Henson to the locker room.

I think this is reprehensible. I bet SOMEONE didn't learn this sort of behavior at the United States Military Academy. In fact, I think Coach K sent his starters off to the locker room once (VT, maybe?) but stayed to the bitter end with the players on the court.

IIRC, K even called a TO with about 30 seconds left in this one to let them fully experience the disaster in which they had just participated, knowing the Clemson fans would be storming the court upon completion of the game.

ITA. I don't have a problem with sending most of their people off the court--I remember watching FSU rush the court when they beat Duke a few years ago, and it's scary. I was really surprised at how many people OY were saying, "Well, nobody's ever gotten hurt before," as though that makes it impossible. People have gotten killed in stampedes at Wal-Mart, for pete's sake. All it takes is for someone to get knocked down, they get stepped on, and possibly hurt really badly. So I think taking as many people as possible out of there ahead of time is a perfectly reasonable precaution. What I think is shitty, though, is Ol' Roy himself also leaving. The coaches should stay, since part of their job is to look after the players, even scrubs. Whatever little respect I still had for Roy is gone. :Boo:

I was told at church today that part of the justification for sending the players away was that the F$U arena is the only one in the ACC that sells beer, and ol roy was worried about drunken happy Seminoles.

Rev. Lawgrad used ol roy as a negative example in today's sermon. Twice. :9f:

How about the sponsoring institutions and the local security and law enforcement officers team up to stop the stampede. The safety of both players and fans should take priority.

In other words, shouldn't it be illegal for this behavior to exist in the first place and maybe those who have the idea of doing it...I don't know, maybe act like they've won a game before?

You know, I can "get" leaving the court to protect players and staff.........to some degree. But to just leave the walk-ons out there to fend for themselves? I mean, did at least an ASSISTANT COACH brave the storm with these guys or was it really a full-on "Fuck you guys, we're outta here!" ??????

Crazy.

Wow..this is maybe worse than being a sore loser, or just worried about his own skin...he claims he didn't even know the game was still being played.
University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams did not know the final 14.2 seconds of the Florida State game Saturday were even played until he watched the game film, according to the university.

I was about to link to this article.

I swear, when I saw the headline, I thought the article was going to be from The Onion, or some other satirical publication.

To quote Alice in Wonderland, the whole situation gets "curiouser and curiouser."

There are so many things wrong with this situation, I wouldn't know where to start, so I will just say... :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f: :9f:

He probably figured that everyone would feel that there would be no need to sit and watch anything if he wasn't there.

No matter how Ole Roy wants to spin his story on the last 14 seconds, it is his responsibility as Head Coach to care and oversee his basketball team and staff. The Captain goes down with the ship, or is the last one to leave. (Ole Roy and the Italian Captain from the Cruise Ship are just alike.... only caring about their azz!)

Captain Sully (the airline pilot Captain), walked the entire length of the airplane 2 times, before leaving the aircraft, when he landed on the Hudson River.

Ole Roy......... THE COWARDLY LION skipping down the YELLOW BRICK ROAD, on the way to the Locker Room, without his entire team! PUSS!!!

Same here; my exact words were, "You have GOT to be fucking kidding me." Either Roy is an idiot for not hearing the loud-ass buzzer *after* they left the court, and an asshole for not noticing five of his players were missing (this is not like a football team, where there are like 50-60 guys, after all), or an idiot asshole for thinking we're all stupid enough to buy that lame-ass story. :9f:
