When Donna and Adam went to the beach this morning, the sea turtles were hatching!! Donna took a lot of pics. I'm sure she will have her camera Sat.

I'd love to see those pictures!

I went to a sea turtle weekend at the Duke Marine Lab a few years ago. We had so much fun studying the turtles. We took a field trip to the Sea Turtle Hospital at Topsail. We also went out on one of the Duke boats and released sea turtles into the ocean right off the Beaufort Inlet.

I :Heartthrob: sea turtles.

How lucky you had the camera, Donna! Did they head straight for the water? Were you able to keep the birds away? Bless those little hearts.

I fear there were a number of nests washed away when Irene struck Topsail. We saw several portected sites a day or two before the storm and only 1 when we returned. :(

The Donna is our granddaughter, Donna. She said volunteers were there putting them in buckets and taking them about 20 feet out into the water to give them a better start.

At Holden Beach (and probably other islands), there is a volunteer program where they monitor the nests, count and report on the hatch, dig a small trench to get the turtles started in the right direction, and then walk the turtles out to the other side of the breakers. Always done after dark, and an annual highlight for the kids.

Topsail Island has a similar program.

We have a program like that here. One of my former co-coworkers is watching a nest at Atlantic Beach.

Gotta love Holden Beach and the surrounding area. So tranquil and family oriented. And it is not commercial Myrtle Beach! And love Sunset Slush!
