I seriously doubt it. They've toed the "we are standing by our man" line for so long, it would make no sense to pull the trigger now, right before the season starts. ** A source has confirmed to IC that Butch Davis has been fired and the players have been notified of the decision.
A UNC official would not confirm or deny the rumor that Butch Davis has been fired as UNC's head football coach, but did provide the following statement:
"The chancellor met with the Board of Trustees today to discuss the future of the football program."

The transfer question is interesting as I'd bet most (all?) of their 20-25 recruits have enrolled already so they are screwed. If they transfer, they sit out a year unless they can petition the ncaa for some sort of waiver due to extenuating circumstances and that would certainly have to be their own stupidity for choosing unc in the 1st place and then, deciding to go to a school in as much potential trouble as the 'holes could/will be. Most likely, someone from the current staff will probably be given an interim head coach title for this year.
The other thing to watch is how many athletes will want to transfer.

It's about time.
But it's also about timing.
And the timing makes a whole lot less sense than the termination itself.
This could have and should have happened much earlier. North Carolina had a dozen compelling and reasonable occasions in its miserable, scandal-scarred past year to fire Davis, and it declined to do so. A partial list of opportunities:
