ILJ and Knee Replacement Surgery

If you've seen ILJ over the last 5 months, you'll know that she has been hobbling w/pain on bum knees. One of them is now terribly arthritic, and she can't truly walk with it, unless she has a cane. The early fear was for total knee replacement surgery, and given all the busy aspect of day-to-day life, she delayed seeing the doctor. Her reaction early on was to grin and bear it, but it has just become too painful for her... and for me to watch.
We found the right doctor, and ILJ is due on Thursday to have her left knee completely replaced. And after she returns home, it will be an extended period of rehab. I hear tell that she will have some beautiful pain meds (none available for EarlJam), but she will effectively be walking with assistance for the next two months. Hopefully she will have full use of the knee again in the next four months or so.
And then there will be another knee to be worked on sometime in the next few years.
Although vibes are ALWAYS appreciated, one of the main reasons for posting this is to ask all of you not to avoid your medical professionals when it comes to pain in the joints. It's better to get treatment at an early stage than it is to wait. The other reason is to ask those of you who have gone through this procedure to pass along any advice.
As always,
Cheers,
Lavabe

It's in the back of our minds right now. It all depends on how she recovers from surgery 1.

I have not yet had surgery for my knees, but two significant injuries last year aggravated problems from numerous injuries and overuse over the years. I know the sort of pain and reduced mobility you're talking about. I've also experienced the difference it can make to seek medical attention early rather than late. You're right on the money with that advice.
Please keep us posted as the process progresses. There's already been plenty of advice regarding pain meds and PT, so I'll refrain from additional comments for now!

I have now belatedly dedicated the Wendy's chocolate frosty I slurped on earlier, late this afternoon, to ILJ, Lavabe and bad knees.
I lost the ACL in my right knee back in '95 and suffered some torn cartilage along the way. Arthoscopy at WF Baptist hospital was great. But, I should have demanded for the ACL replacement. I was 39, and it was 6 months recovery for me. I have nothing of total replacement experience to relate, personally. My 96 yr old next door neighbor had his replaced nearly 20 years ago and had very quick recovery. He's mobile now with a walker and a scooter but it's more due to his age and balance rather than any structural issues.
Believe in a good Physical Therapist.

Mad vibes
And this:

I had hip surgery at 26. The skill of the surgeon is out of one's hands, but being faithful about therapy is a choice one can make. It makes a world of difference. Hopefully, she can get a therapist she trusts and then encourage your wife to trust him/her. I despaired at times when I was struggling to lift my leg an inch and having outside perspective on the healing process was so helpful.
Praying that with time this period of pain is but a distant memory.
