Here's something fun. I love barbecuing. If I only had a grill/smoker to cook on, I'd be happy. I enjoy watching the show BBQ Pitmasters, and while watching the other night, I decided to look up what competitions were in NC.
AHA!!! There is one in October, and even better yet, it's on a weekend that Duke does not play football.
http://www.bbqthrowdown.net/
It's held in Rocky Mount, and I will have none other than my most excellent teammates TNTDevil and CowboyDevil working with me.
I tossed the idea out to them both last night and the three of us are on board. None of us has ever done one of these before, so it should be fun not only for the experience but to be around some true professionals. If we're lucky, we'll walk away with some tips to make our tailgates even that more tasty. I have only one goal for the weekend...to not come in last place.
Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down - October 7 & 8, 2011
Good thing we have some time to practice.

Yes! There are technically 6 spots open that get to enjoy some free eats, so 3 are left.

We are thinking of team names. TNT suggested Duke Blue Que Crew and Cowboy suggested TrueBlueQue. Both work for me.

In anticpation of this fun endeavor I put a 10 pound pork picnic on the grill at midnight. Turn in time for pork is 1pm, brisket is at 1:30, so we better get used to some night cooking.
The picnic I bought was mislabeled as sliced pork, so it was only $1.38/lb. I could not turn down a $12 huge hunk of meat. My neighbors better be hungry. It's just after 11 now, and the pork is just about done. Going to pull it off within the hour and let it rest for a bit.
I may go visit DukePA and friends in EI today...she'll be getting some.

Lucky DPA! She's been in the kitchen preserving the bounty from "Shelton Farms" all week. Now, somebody's bringing HER somethin' !!

I jumped over here to the "Our House Forum" to see if there were any new posts in the CTN Tailgate 2011 thread and I'm really glad I did. You guys participating in the 4th Annual Eastern BBQ Throw Down is exciting stuff so let me start by wishing you a hearty GOOD LUCK! Living in Japan for extended years like I did really limited my ability to travel to NC and eat good Q so I learned how to make it myself on the backyard grill. Now the first couple of tries ended with some pretty horrible stuff, but over time the old axiom "practice makes perfect" kicked in and I made some decent stuff on my Weber kettle. Currently, I own a big Brinkmann charcoal grill with a side mounted firebox (Father's Day gift) so it will soon be time to cook some more Q. I look forward to hearing some Sea Stories about the Rocky Mount competition.
