Wake's fan is about to be hit

Things are about to get ugly in the sports department on Thursday when the Today show airs. It doesn't sound like Wake is denying that something happened. What we don't know is how much of what happened is truth. This could be a case of the coverup being more of the problem than the crime itself. (The crime itself is obviously dispicable, but covering it up always makes things worse.)

Letter from the Girls Mother:

Says one of the boys, was a Captain in his Senior Year, and another boy is in the NBA, now.

I am sure Nancy Grace will have alot to say about this issue. And stay tuned for the Today show on Thursday.

Crap. This is so embarrassing.

I wonder whether this was a factor in Ron Wellman's firing Dino Gaudio a year or so later. . .

I had the same thought, Cathy.

Since the false rape charges were leveled against our lacrosse players, I have to take this type of situation with a boulder of salt and hope that the truth comes out and that justice is served. I so well remember hearing about our lacrosse players and my first thought was that it looked really bad for them, but my second thought was, "what if they're innocent?"

From what the WRAL website article said, the players admitted the sexual contact, but said it was consensual. That is in contrast to (at least one of) our lacrosse players, who wasn't even at the party but was nonetheless ID'd by that paragon of virtue, Crystal Mangum.

Still, one hopes that there was a proper investigation. From the article, it doesn't sound like there was much of one, but unfortunately these days "journalistic integrity" s an oxymoron.

A bit of difference here. Duke took immediate and decisive action. Obviously they went overboard, but they took action. In this case, it appears as if Wake did it's best to keep the situation hushed and internal. It does seem as if the woman was discouraged from pressing charges by the powers that be, to the point that when she did try it was too late. Does that mean that charges ever would have been pressed in the first place? No...but that should have been up to the courts to decide, not the school.
The student returned to North Carolina and didn’t tell anyone until two days later. She told a friend, who insisted she report it to Wake Forest campus police. Detective James Rae of the Wake Forest Campus Police did an investigation and forwarded statements he got from Teague, Clark and another man to the Miami Police Department, the report said.
After the investigation was completed, the police consulted with prosecutor Laura Adams in June 2009. Adams eventually decided against filing criminal charges because there was no physical evidence and corroborating witnesses, the student didn’t report the allegations immediately to police, and Clark denied the allegations, according to the police report.

So the issue is what happened between March and June. That's a long time. If she had reported it right away, charges still may not have been filed, but if the long delay between the incident and the DA being notified was due in any part to Wake's trying to keep it quiet, they will look bad, whether there was a crime or not.

I think it's a pretty shaky case, and while my thoughts go to the girl if she actually felt threatened/coerced, the lack of evidence supports the decision not to press charges. But it still should have been up to law enforcement in Florida to make that decision, not the Wake police and administration.

Edit...it's hard to tell from the above when the Miami police knew about it. If they were told right away, then the girl is shit out of luck, and Wake should be pissed off that they are about to dragged through the mud after they handled things the way they should have. So many unknowns.

CB&B, thanks for posting the article from the WS Journal. It fills in some blanks, though it causes some other questions.

The whole situation sucks. I just hope it is all truthfully and fairly resolved.

Her side of the story.
Maggie Hurt, a former band member at Wake Forest, said Gary Clark and Jeff Teague invited her to a party back at their Miami hotel room after the Demon Deacons were eliminated from the 2009 NCAA tournament. Hurt said that when she arrived, the room was empty. She said she was forced into a bathroom and made to perform oral sex on Clark.

“They opened the door, it was complete dark, and I was physically shoved from behind into the room,” Hurt told NBC. “I was scared. He had big hands. He could palm a basketball and it was on the back of my neck. I felt like if I didn’t do what he asked, he would hurt me.”

Hurt alleged that Teague guarded the bathroom door while the assault took place.

She is from the varnish zone, for what that's worth:

Can't say that I know her, though frankly not too many Wake Forest students ever show up in court. (The last case of the morning involved a UVA student, though. Tip: if you're drunk and at the Martinsville Speedway, give the officers your real ID and not your fake Texas one.)

After being on Today Show (National morning show on NBC), where does this story go? Awareness!

On the show, did the WF players call Maggie a "Groupie", or is that what the reporters said? Maggie, the WF student and band member would hardly be a Groupie. (thats my opinion) The band members, cheerleaders, mascot travel with the teams either via bus or the charterd planes.

I was very surprised to see these women on national television, with their names and faces revealed. I thought their names would have been omitted and faces blurred out. Mainly for their privacy and protection. Have either Clark or Teague made a comment themselves or through an attorney?

I would think Coach Dino, would have been made aware of the situation, following the allegations. Just my thought. :twocents:

WFU President says school was Misrepresented on the Today Show.

Very interesting article!

Has Nancy Grace added her :twocents: yet?

On the Other Board, on the Home Page, more about the WF story. And one of the links, was the Miami Incident report. I admit, I clicked on the link, and quickly viewed the Incident (Police) Reports.

I felt like I was on the website TMZ.com or Smokinggun website.
