Gary Williams is retiring. He'll be part of the AD's staff. http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-baskbl/ ... 11aab.html

I didn't expect that. I had to look at the date to make sure it wasn't an April Fool's joke.

This sucks! Gary Williams is the second best coach in the ACC and is going to be hard to replace. He consistently achieved more with less. With the suddenness of this announcement, I hope everything is okay with his health. One of my favorite "what if" questions: what if Gary Williams could have recruited the talent to Maryland that Paul Hewitt had a GT?

Gary Williams' retirement is a complete and total surprise to me. I may not like the behavior or the MD fans, but I respect Gary as a coach. As Bob said, he consistently does more with less. The ACC will miss him. Best of luck to him in his retirement.

I'll definitely miss Gary. He was always entertaining, and I actually enjoyed listening to his interviews here in DC. Man, the area loses Gary and Jim in the same year. What will the morning radio sports guys do? They were both great radio personalities for interviewing.

Oh no!!!!! And the Crazies didn't even get a chance to say good-bye.

It's weird, but I'm actually going to miss the guy. :-s

I saw the link on my homepage of aol. I was surprised. But he will stay on as an asst AD. The link I listened to said Gary Williams liked to coach the games, but the recruiting was wearing on him. I will actually miss Gary! He was on the best coaches in the ACC.

They said Maryland is one of the best 10 jobs in the nation. There is alot of talent in DC/Maryland area to recruit from.

I'm so glad I got to see his last game in Cameron Indoor. My kids and I waved good-bye to him. I just didn't know that our good-bye would be forever.

I guess he really is one of the "one and dones."

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh see ya!

The best compliment I could give to him, would be that if he were your coach, you would have been extremely proud of his effort. He will much missed, and not just for his ability to come up wet. I think he knew how to get the best from his teams. Whether or not they decided to go along with his plans is debatable. The assistants will feel a measure of relief. :D

The thing that strikes me is that I believe he's the last ACC coach (other than K of course) that was there when I was a student. Weird end of an era thing, I guess. K is the last of the old guard.
