I thought the stripping of dignity occurred when they mixed the bulldog with a pug, resulting in today's stouter, less-than-hardy bulldog. The bulldog breed standard is in the process of being revised to favor a taller, more robust dog, in keeping with the breed's late nineteenth-century appearance, when it was a strong and athletic breed.
