He is also a huge Muppet fan (the scene in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' where he blithers through the 'Muppet Show' theme before breaking down is a loving shout-out), and thus the perfect person to reboot the franchise. He and the producers worked hard at the script, aiming for something that would recapture the Muppets' original wit and irreverence, rather than following the "Muppets play dress-up" theme that worked reasonably well in 'The Muppet Christmas Carol,' well enough in 'Muppet Treasure Island,' and terribly in 'The Muppet Wizard of Oz'. I really, really, really can't wait.

If we want to get technical, 'Sam and Friends', the very first Muppet show, debuted in 1955, the same year as 'Captain Kangaroo'. Sam was a funny-looking bald guy. Kermit also debuted on 'S&F', but he originally was more of an indeterminate lizard-like creature. Not until the late 1960s did he become explicitly a frog.
Cathy, you still probably wouldn't have had Muppets and Capt. Kangaroo, though; 'S&F' was aired only locally in the Baltimore/DC area.

Ask a kid today, what the 'Magic Words' are and there is no telling what you'll hear. Youth society has gone to Hell with the retirement of Captain Kangaroo. He very much did teach American kids right from wrong.

Uncle Paul (Montgomery, WRAL) was a product of my little hometown. Nice fella, he was. My father knew him well.

I LOVED Uncle Paul!

I had the Uncle Paul Show and Captain Kangaroo. In the afternoons, we had WITNey the Hobo Show aka "The Funny Page."

One of my Facebook "likes" is "Time for Uncle Paul." I wonder if there is a Captain Kangaroo FB page or a WITNey the Hobo FB page. . .

(My kids had the Muppets, but that was mostly on videotape.)
