50 Days To 50 Years

I've got a few months to plan my 50th birthday celebration. Since it appears that no man is going to sweep me off my feet and take me to Paris to celebrate my 50th birthday, I've decided to take charge of my own celebration.

Therefore, I've decided to go to Paris Las Vegas with my girlfriends. I'm not going to be able to go to Las Vegas on my actual birthday because my mom has just booked a trip and will be in India on my birthday. (There goes my child care. . . )

So, in order to make this Las Vegas trip work with my 50th birthday celebration, I've decided to do "50 Days To 50 Years" and do something fun and different on each of the 50 days preceding my 50th birthday. The trip to Las Vegas will fall within those 50 days.

I need your help, CTN! Help me think of fifty fun and different ways to celebrate my 50th birthday. Here's my list so far:

1. Get a professional massage.

2. Donate $50 to a favorite charity.

3. Go to Paris Las Vegas.

4. Go to a Duke Football game. (It's not new, but I will have a Duke Football game during those 50 days preceding my birthday.)

I will consider any and all suggestions. And if any of you CTN gals are interested in helping this old gal celebrate her 50th birthday in Las Vegas, just let me know! It's going to be a great party!

I'm not a CTN girl...but I'll chime in on this. You may be turning 50, but you are far from an old gal. Same with DukePA. You two are the teenageriest women I know.

50 M&Ms or chocolate of your choice. All in the same day, of course.

Ooh, how fun! A few ideas that come to mind:

* Mani/Pedi with a girlfriend
* New haircut/style/color/something
* Trip to a museum or art gallery that you've always wanted to visit... on a work day!
* A special day/date with each son
* A day of silent reflection/personal retreat. Good time to think about what you want to accomplish in the next 50 years!
* Day at the beach
* FILMFEST!! (Either your favorites past, or those ones you've been "Meaning to see.")
* Cooking class
* Visit your: hometown; grade school; houses you have lived in; high school; college classrooms -- anything that's feasible/reasonable for that trip down memory lane
* Full health check-up (if you've been avoiding) -- it's not necessarily fun, but it's good for you, and you'll feel better for having done it!
* Get a new gadget (Kindle? Android phone? Wii?) - something fun that keeps you in the now of technology.
* Participate in some sort of volunteering (does your church do something? Habitat for Humanity? Local food pantry?)
* A day in your PJ's. Be as slothful as you wish!

For my 50th my mother had my two grandmothers engagement ring diamonds set into a necklace. The rings had been in my jewelry box forever (she enlisted Mr. Windsor to steal them). If you have ‘heirlooms’ like that hanging around unworn have them remade into something beautiful you’ll wear as a present to yourself

Hire a cleaning service to come do the house from top to bottom

Scan some photos from childhood on and load them into a digital frame…then use it!

as someone closing in fast on 52 - 50 rocks!

Walk (at least) a mile a day for the next 50 days. It'll help burn off those 50 M&Ms you ate yesterday (or ever day until you turn 50).

You've got some great ideas here. Great minds think alike - I think DevilAlumna got all the ones I thought of, plus a few more! In keeping with the jewelry idea mentioned by Windsor, how about a charm bracelet with charms representing significant events in your life? Maybe you could have your family and friends pick out things that make them think of you or are significant in their relationship with you.

For mine, I went fishing then returned to the shack above the lake to witness a shitload of balloons and people and adult beverages and steaks and cake. Then, there was a concert by Rush (okay, so it was a DVD with outdoor audio) and a bonfire. By the end of the night, I was nearly ready to jump in. :D

DO what YOU like most! :-BD Then, no remorse.

I think there are some really cool ideas. Y'all are pretty cool.

If you're considering a charitable donation, I recommend Coalition to Unchain Dogs. It's a non-profit volunteer group that builds fences for dogs on chains. They also educate the community about the detrimental effects of chaining dogs in addition to spaying/neutering and general health education. Kelly and I volunteer for them; we've been on fence builds and before the cold snap we helped deliver hay to dogs with fences and dogs on waiting lists for fences. It's really amazing to see how a dog's personality changes from being on a chain, and then being able to run around. Watch some of their videos, it should melt your heart.

Some other things:
- Go to the ACC Tourney
- Eat an amazing meal, like haute cuisine
- Watch the sunrise in the dessert
- Get a badass leather jacket

I love this idea, Cathy. Perhaps next year I'll steal a page from you and a page from the Worldwide Leader in Sports and do 30 for 30.
A few suggestions:
-Treat yourself to a triple bacon cheeseburger with extra mayo, or whatever your favorite terribly unhealthy, but oh-so-delicious meal might be.
-Blow off the real world and spend a day at the beach (or on some other day trip you've perhaps been meaning to take).
-Concert tickets (or theater, or Monster Jam...whatever floats your boat).
-Put away a dollar every day during the 50, plus whatever change lingers in your pocket or purse at the end of the day. By the time your big day rolls around, you'll have socked away a nice little sum, and you can go and treat yourself to something nice, whether it be a fancy meal, new clothes, or whatever.

I love it!! How about writing your 16 year old self a letter about what you have learned and who you've become? Then write another letter to your 60 year oldself about who you hope to be ten years from now. Hmmm, think I'll do that!

I think EJ was planning to take you to Paris and propose at the Eiffel Tower. Way to screw up his plans.

Now that the football schedule has been announced, I need to ask your opinions: we have four home football games during the 50 days leading up to my 50th birthday. On which Saturday should we check off "Party with my friends at a Duke football game?"

In other words, at which Brunchgate should we celebrate my 50th?

September 24 (Duke v. Tulane), assuming I'm not in Las Vegas then
October 15 (Duke v. FSU)
October 22 (Duke v. WFU) This is the day that both of my schools face off in football.
October 29 (Duke v. VaTech) This is the day that is closest to my birthday.

What say you all?

Well, Oct 22 is a day that one of your schools is going to win the game, and the one most likely it will be a Duke victory! I do not know much about Tulane, but I don't think we'll be favored against FSU or VT this season... ;)

And the weather should be pretty nice, too! Don't know if there might be a conflict with an exhibition basketball game that day or Parents Weekend (most likely the following weekend), not that either event would have any affect on YOUR 50 to 50 event!

If you schedule it for Oct 29, I will attend, dressed in full pirate regalia.
Not that my sartorial choices should have any bearing on your birthday plans.

I'd go for the one closest to your birthday. You can have a Halloween Birthday cake, of which VDB would totally approve. :D

I vote October 29th! At a minimum we celebrate your 50th birthday. If the football gods be with us, we will also celebrate a Duke football miracle victory!!

It looks like October 29 is going to be Parents Weekend.

I like the idea of celebrating my birthday with my Brunchgate friends on the weekend closest to my birthday, so I'm going to celebrate 50 days to 50 years with you all at Brunchgate on October 29.

You all MUST come in costume! Wilson's going to be a Pirate. What are the rest of you going to wear for your costumes?
