Maryland game (1/9/11)

The Terps, or is that Twerps, visit Cameron today and should give our Blue Devils a solid challenge. Pomeroy currently ranks Maryland at #14, which is higher than any team we've played this season (today's rankings not the rankings at the time of the game). Maryland is a strong rebounding team and Jordan Williams is dominate in the low post. I believe we will need to pressure the Terps backcourt and turn them over frequently to neutralize their interior advantage. In the halfcourt, we will probably double team Williams but playing him straight up with a focus on shutting down the other four players is an option. Can one dominate player beat us if the other four can't contribute? Williams is very shaky at the free throw line so look for Duke to play some "Hack-a-Shaq" or "Hack-a-Williams" defense at times.
It should be a solid game and I'm looking forward to it. My prediction is Duke by 15. If Jordan Williams encounters foul trouble, Duke could blow Maryland out. There is lots of good discussion in the game thread over at DBR.

Thanks Bob, nothing to disagree with. I haven't watched the twerps this year, so I know little about them. JH said that General Greivis may be there.
Spear The Turtle!!!
Jesus Hurley has a preview on the front page.

Nice preview. Jordan Williams is definitely a beast in the low post. However, I have to disagree with JH's prediction of a 14 point victory. We will win by 15! Take it to the bank!

Halftime Observations
Up 1, and damn fortunate to be there considering the lack of shooting proficiency.
Getting outrun down the floor.
SEAL THE DAMN BASELINE, PLEASE. We're hedging to the outside allowing them to advance up the baseline and when the help steps in, the ballcarrier is finding the open big man underneath. This must cease! Make the man move back to the outside.
The turtles don't have a matchup for Kyle. He is, or should be, the key offensive factor.
A low number of fouls in the first will allow for a more aggressive defense for the second half.
Keep their ball handling on the outside. Zone them if this is what it takes.
Shoot better. Ugly releases, not just a little off, ugly.
Too many turnovers. Watch what you're doing. Treasure the ball.

Damn! You beat me to it!
There needs to be a whole lot of shooting drills before the next game.
Synchronization is out of kilter. If you've noticed, rebound jump timing is off. They're often going up too early, so they are on the way back down just as the ball comes off the rim. Damn thing called gravity.
It's good to see that as bad as this team played at times, they still came away with the win. There's practice to be done.

It was a fun game. I had a great time with my boys. Now I need to watch it on Tivo because I could only see half of the game from my vantage point in the student section.
