New "members"

Tilly alerted me earlier today that we had some new members that seemed curious, I've just noticed that we have another one. Hopefully I won't have to take the route that McGrupp did with BTD (verifying new members via email), but these "members" are in actuality spammers. I don't know what the point of their existence is exactly, or how it benefits them, but I will be deleting them as they come in.

I've also banned the user via IP. (It's been the same each time.) Since I'm not "smarter than you are", I'm assuming they can change the IP readily easily. We'll see how long it takes for nerkelsomethingorother and Mordatosser to come back.

Ah but you are smarter...you just don't feel the need to announce to all the world.

What is the purpose of "spammers" taking the time to create profiles on a board like this? We're public, and you don't have any other special rights when you create a profile.

Dunno, I don't see the purpose of it. They aren't advertising anything, at least not yet. I'd love to know the answer to that question.

It didn't take them too long. "Hohutoksev" just signed up. Soon to be deleted "Hohutoksev" that is.

I enabled some more security settings in the signup process, and deeper spam/ip checking. New users will now have to authenticate after recieving an email with a confirmation code, so at least they have to put some effort into it.

Found this site while googling the last member's name.

I haven't read through it all, but these guys are fighting the tough fight. Hoping to find some reasons and ideas on it after checking it out.
