Duke @ GT

"I think our players, young and old, have different expectations of what they expect of themselves," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said Tuesday. "It's disappointing to lose ballgames, but not disappointing to see us continue to get better and grow as a program and really play excellent football in all phases a big percentage of the time.

"Now is an opportunity to take that next step."
http://www.heraldsun.com/view/full_stor ... in_article

The game is in just a couple days, and we get to see how the tough loss to BC has affected the players. My guess is not much. They must know it was a winnable game that they (and the coaches) let slip by, but I'm doubting they are dwelling on it. My guess is they are fully focused for the GT game and ready to take it to the Wreck. I wonder if they are looking forward to playing against the option again, I bet so.

Same storyline, no turnovers.

Despite the Blue Devils' 3-7 record, this is a team that can beat the Jackets, who have only won two more games than Duke this year. Quarterback Sean Renfree has been playing well -- no interceptions in the past three games -- and Duke has won two of its past three. Add to that Duke's experience this year against option-loving opponents Army and Navy, and it's possible the Blue Devils put Georgia Tech's bowl hopes on hold yet another weekend.

I'm looking forward to a lively chat tomorrow. This will be my last Duke football game for the season as I'll be in Portland watching the basketball game during the UNC game so hopefully I can cheer our beloved Blue Devils to victory one more time in 2010!

Well that's a shitty peice of scheduling! The bball game is at 4. I'm hoping for a 3:30 kickoff for football, but that means we'll miss the bball game. If it's a noon kick, then we can watch the bball game in the parking lot after football. I hate noon starts, but now I'm sort of pulling for one. Crapola!!! X(

What was the purpose of GT's last TO?
Bush league shit?

This team isn't far off. It's a fine line.

Well-spoken sir! You are correct in your assessment.

I know a lot of folks are very, very disappointed about today's outcome. I know I'm heartbroken. However, as the saying goes: "The Devil is in the details." (See what I did there w/"Devil? No? Never mind.)

Not to go all "grumpy old man" on y'all but here are the "stages" I've been through as a Duke Football fan:

Carl Franks years:
In these days, you had to go into WW as we didn't have teh teevee technologies yet. Serious roadblock on quality tailgating. However, got to see some good teams just "go off" on us. (I felt bad for the Duke players a lot of time. Ask me about the Louisville game.) Franks' final season ushers in the first teevee (broadcast only) tailgate when I unveiled teh 13" color teevee.

Franks final game also ushered in one hell of a bender for yours truly. Teh teevee technologies, a 42 point half-time deficit, and a cooler full of fine German beer combined to produce perhaps, one of my last really, really horrible hangovers.

Ted Roof (second half of "Franks'" season):
Nobody wanted Ted. If fact, dislike of Ted was so strong that it created a "Give it to Ted. That way when it goes teh shit, we don't have to hire him full-time" faction. Then they got "Roofied" when Ted won 2 of the last three games. This included Ted's victory at UNC (at which yours truly was present, in full Duke regalia and showed UNC friends how to tailgate.) So now Duke had to hire Ted and I had a new mantra- "At least we're competitive!"

And so it continued. We didn't win all that many more games but, we did become competitive. Recruiting picked up. We "won" some >1 star players. It was actually fun to go in to WW and watch the first half.

Sadly, we just didn't have "four quarter" athletes (and we still don't but, we're getting there), so you know how the second half would play-out. Ahh but, the good times... surprising Clemson and winning on a 54 yd FG (back when Duke kickers couldn't kick it in the ocean while standing in a canoe)... beating his Alma Mater- GT and going on the field with son, who walked up to Coach Roof and asked to shake his hand, and Roof, who was just kinda' standing there with a shit-eating grin on his face, seemed very honored to shake Ethan's hand.

But Roof started what Cut inherited. Ted got the Yoh Center built, got us a couple of recruits and, began to build a "program" but, big problem, Ted didn't know how to "build a program". He's a damn fine coach but, big difference between a "Position coach" or "coordinator" and "Head coach". Alas, Ted was not long for Duke. However, he did give the fans a reason to show up, we didn't win but, we were competitive for a bit.

So now... Cut's third season... and we've already become so accustomed to a) winning a game and; b) actually defeating other ACC opponents, that we've totally over-looked how far we've progressed. Remember in the examples above we, at our best, we were surrendering half the game to our opponent. Now, you can "chart" our losses, in certain games, to a small number of plays. Think about it... (These are my opinion):

Wake- 3 plays
MD- 2 plays
BC- 2 plays
GT- 3 plays

Seven plays and we're in a BFE bowl. 10 plays and we're dang close to playing in teh CLT for an ACC Championship. Regardless of what happens next Saturday. (My prediction to come...)

We're a good team. A pretty good team but, the next step is the toughest. And, right now, we're not deep enough, experienced enough, mature enough, to whip that "next" step's ass.

We're getting there. Not as fast as some, including me, would like but, we are progressing. The coaches have given these kids what they need to be successful. Duke is beginning to understand the benefits of a successful football program and, the fans... umm... well... there's room for improvement.

But, winning on the field comes down to the players making plays. This season, so far, we haven't made ten plays. Ten plays. For perspective- Under Franks, we were lucky to make ten plays. Under Roof we would make thirty to forty. Now, finally, Cut has got the team down to a specific number of plays and the number is <5 (per game).

When your number of blown plays is say..>20 it's difficult, while in "film-study", to identify breakdowns. In fact @ >20 effed up plays (See also: VT game), it could be called a "systemic failure". Now we've got it down to a quantifiable number of plays per "winnable" games. That's progress.

I get the feeling that Cut isn't a guy who is gonna' tolerate not doing your job. Our DBs have improved so much (unfortunately, you can't coach size) but w/out a decent pass rush, no secondary can cover more than five seconds.. Guys other than Renfree, Vernon, Varner, Kelly, Hefelt have to start making plays

That's a GD big-time step for our "program". This won't be "our year" but, we can sit back and, once relaxed, realize that "our year(s)" are coming...

Great post but I have on qualm. I don't blame yesterday's loss on the players, I blame it on the coaches. Specifically I blame it on whomever decided to leave Connette in (after Renfree had led a beautiful drive in downfield) so he could throw that pick 6. Not only did that equate from at the very least to a likely tie to a 10 point deficit, but it changed the momentum of the game. Renfree had a great day (with a couple bad passes but all QB's have those) and we decide to let the guy who's only been in the game all of one play throw the ball. It's plays like that when I really hate the 2 QB system. Use Connette for what he's good at, leave the passing to Renfree.

Overall I agree with what you say in this fine summary, TNT.

I would add that when Coach Cutcliffe arrived on the scene, not only was the team's conditioning poor, the kicking needed to stay in many games was abysmal. Kicking and conditioning were among the first things Coach Cutcliffe set out to change immediately. Now in the third season, we have a kicker who's a contender for a national award for kickers and according to Warrick Dunn, a possible All America nominee. This is a case of good coaching, not new personnel.

Other examples of fine coaching include a quarterback who's rewritten most of Duke's passing records plus some ACC and NCAA records in two years and receivers who are on pace to rewrite records for their positions.

Finally, Duke has gone from a laughingstock program..... always mentioned in national sports reports for an extended streak of losses.... to one that's becoming very competitive and surprising their opponents. The most amazing phenomenon may be that opposing teams and fans may see this more clearly than many Duke fans.

It's not long until the Victory Bell is rescued from the Cheaters and brought home where it belongs.

All good points and perspective but I must disagree with your conclusion. We are not a pretty/good FB team. We are a mediocre FB team. We are an improved FB squad. After starting 1-6, I thought 1-11 was a real possibility with all the mistakes we continued to make. I haven't look at stats but we gotta be giving up 35+ points/game, skewed by Alabama and a horrendous defensive effort against the reakin' Deacons. Hell, we also gave up more yds to uva than to Alabama but fortunately pulled that one out, making several really fine plays on our game-winning TD drive. We gotta be giving up 400+ yds/game. Both of those probably put us near the bottom of the acc. We miss too many tackles, give up WAAAY too many long gainers in the air and have just pissed away too many chances for TDs in the red zone, from coaching and player perspectives. Yes, we are closer and better but we ain't a good FB team. Good FB teams are/would be about 6-5 now and be thinking about what bowl sends us an invitation. And, with our schedule this year we have every expection to believe we shoulda been at that point now. And don't give me that shoulda/coulda/woulda cliche. We have failed to execute on those several occasions that have cost us 3-4 W this year. I'll be there on Saturday, cringing at how many more toes we'll shoot off against the 'holes. I'm almost ready for Oz to call a few plays during the final game of the year.

Consistency is the key difference between this edition of a season and what separates them from a winning season. If you have an offense that can score on damn near anybody and everybody, moving the ball down the field like it should be done and then...SHIT! A f%#4kin' fumble inside the 10 or 20...well, somebody lost focus and this is a reflection on the coaching staff. I don't think the drop-off can be directly fingered (Huh..huh. I said 'fingered') toward Cut. I think he's nowhere else but straight ahead on the field.

This team is young and the improvement over past years efforts should give all a reason to be optomistic for the future. Good recruits are coming in and next year...sophs will be juniors. Juniors will be seniors.

TNT's look at the number of blown plays that have cost wins is one of the best observations that can be made about the status of this, or any other team. Be patient. Good things are right around the corner. At least, it can be seen from here. It was miles away a couple of years ago.

Pray they can keep it together next week for one ending hurrah and momentum that can be carried forth into 2011!

I still say that last TO from GT was bull! Glad to see the last play was sniffed and snuffed out as a matter of self-respect. :happy-bouncyblue:

On Connette's INT that was run back 85 yds for a TD-the receiver ran the wrong route.

But, if the receiver runs the 3 yd slant that he's supposed to, he's in front of the LB or DB, not behind him and it's not a pick most likely.

Speaking of tango, this has been Duke FB to me most of the year:
