Flour Sifters

I remember when I was growing up, our family had an old-ass but cool contraption in the cupboard (it would REALLY be an old-ass now!).

It was made of metal, had a "screen" at the bottom of it, and a handle on the outside with wires inside of the holder, just above the mesh screen.

It was a flour sifter. We had a small one. My grandmother had a big-ass flour sifter. Took the space of the entire cupboard.

Does anyone still use these things? What does a modern one look like?

I used to think flour sifters looked really cool, and a part of me still feels this way. They were fun to play with as kids.

Discuss? Insight?

So you're rubbing it in that my family has an old, dilapidated flour sifter? Look, my family didn't have a lot of money but I had GOOD parents! They did the best they could and always provided for all four children! I don't know what kind of sick pleasure you get in rubbing our lack of money in our FACE!

You and your new flour sifter.

God you are cruel.

If it makes you feel better - the one from my growing up years was old. However, it was well traveled having spent 7 years in Asia.

The one I have would probably be considered old now as I'm beginning to think that I just might be getting older.

Mom had one (probably still has the same one) when I was growing up. It never got used. I thought cakes came from a box, or decorated from the bakery for your birthday, until I was about 10 and had as a church youth project to make a cake from scratch.

I don't own one.

I had better not find out that anyone is putting green vegetable matter in my flour sifter.

That model of flour sifter is still around. I had to replace mine just a few years ago. I do use it for various baking projects that come along, especially during the football and holiday seasons. ;;)

I have one of those old ones. I just pulled it down. On the tin it is stamped "Bromwell's Measuring Sifter Guaranteed" and it has marks for two through 5 cups, with a wooden red knob on the crank.

I think a painting of a flour sifter, done the right way, would be awesome. I am serious.
