Tipping

No, not cow tipping.
What is your "Tipping Philosophy?"
I know someone in my family that will tip 15% only, pre-tax, no matter how good the service was. Obviously, I do not agree with this.
My philosophy is to tip according to performance. If the server took good care of you, tip 20% at LEAST. Tip more if it was really good service.
Here's where I get cruddlemuckled though: If I go to a restaurant, have a few beers, and order take out, what do I tip? The service really only covered the beers brought to me, say $9.00. But with the food, the total bill may be $23.00. But this is take out. The bartender didn't really "serve me" on the food. Do I tip on the $9.00 beer tab, or on the $23.00 total bill?
Thoughts?

WHY In Japan is there NO TIPPING? I repeat... NO TIPPING here in Japan. I've been told that to tip is to insult.

I once failed to tip a Japanese server because of this exact thought. He was fucking pissed. He said that whole "don't tip the Japanese" thing was bogus and was a bad practical joke that has sent many Japanese into poverty. Apparently, Chinese visitors and conventions bureau started the whole thing and it has worked beyond their dreams. The message from my friend Yoshimoto? Tip Us! Please! Tip Us! Stop believing the LIES!
